Send the posting on Craigslist an email that asks for a company email or website or other method of contact to get them your resume.

In the message, tell them you are doing this because you hear as many bad things as you do good about Craigslist. You don't want your personal info all over the place.

Once you know who you are sending to you can get phone numbers and all kinds of other info to get you in the door.

I'm in HR for a major corporation. My advice is stop applying for Craigslist jobs, no credible company will post jobs on there. They're mostly scam type jobs or some other low level job you probably won't want to do. I've had luck finding side hustles on there (promotions, passing out fliers etc).

Indeed and LinkedIn are the two major sites where most of the good jobs are. However, without a lot of professional experience the old saying rings true today: it's not about what you know it's who you know. Ring up all your old HS/College buddies, family members, acquaintances, old coworkers. Anybody you might know that can vouch for you and can get you in at their Company. Almost every job I've had I got because I knew someone at the company that could vouch for me and put my resume in the right hands.

Yes, at this point I've pretty much stopped applying for CL jobs. The jobs I did find on there were, in fact, "scam type" jobs as you say...and I was lucky to find tutoring jobs as well when I was in the US for a while looking for jobs.

As for ringing up people, being out of the US for so long my social network there is non-existent at this point. I have called the FEW people I still keep in touch with but no luck yet. My family owns their own business so no help there. They do keep an eye out in case any opportunity is mentioned to them, but they work in a sector completely different to what I do or my skills.

I'm lucky in the sense that I have no debts to worry about and have my own place in the US, but other than that I realize how tough it's going to be in general. I wanted to get into finance but of course they are looking for fresh young grads, not someone in their mid 30s.

It will be easier to help you if you define exactly what job you want.

Right now you are saying, "I want a job! Any job! Please!"

That makes it very difficult to develop a strategy for you.

Define first what you want, example: "I would like to be an employed professional translator for a major company involved in the import-export business between the United States and Spain."

Once you have defined what you want, you then find the people who can give it to you, and start approaching them. We can assist you with the strategy and tactics required to accomplish this.

Resumes are not a good way of applying to jobs. Please read "ALPHA MALE VERSUS BETA MALE IN THE JOB MARKET" in my Networking guide (link is in my signature) to understand why (it's on page 2 just after the short introduction, if you want to skip straight to it).

Same here. I'm currently at a top 20 business school in the US and I have NEVER gotten an actual job interview from dropping my resume....a few internship interviews that went nowhere but that was it.

Everywhere I've actually made progress through the process was either because I cold called someone I could form a connection with(alumni of either a school or a previous company I've worked for) or because they posted directly to my schools program and were recruiting on campus.

There's a couple good guides on here on how to use it effectively.


Also I would be prepared to consider as an absolutely last ditch option going to school. There's plenty of business roles out there which are bullshitty enough that you can do them with good people skills, some language skills, and a few MS classes. One example I applied to recently was an "international supply chain consultant" at a US fast food company that involves a year of training followed by working overseas on supply chain projects. It's the kind of job where your language skills and foreign experience would be extremely valuable to the company.


My advice for a starting point: look up what US based companies have operations in your area. Then use LinkedIN to find some American expats at those offices and email them an introductory question. "Hey, I'm another expat and would love to learn about X" is a good intro. Someone is going to bite on that and agree to a phone call.

You could teach private or charter schools relatively easily.

And you're getting good advice about what you are trying to do. Any focus is invaluable.....and think beyond job titles. Do you want to be focused on people? Working a hard science or are you OK with fluff and more vague subjects? Are travel requirements OK? Do you want to be hands on or behind a cubicle?

Knowing your desired work/lifestyle/salary balance would be helpful too. There's some jobs out there that pay well but not relative to the hours involved and vice versa.

Think about questions like that first and I'm sure we will have some great ideas. If you really enjoyed teaching I have some ideas in mind that are tough to reach and demanding if you get them but will go a long ways towards closing the career gap from age.

I'm ok with both vague subjects or the hard sciences...I've worked in both. Travel is fine, no issues.

I do really enjoy teaching (the sciences)...but I prefer college level students.

I'm in sales..... medical device is heavily competitive and generally requires proven sales experience until they consider you.

Pharma is similar but not as competitive AFAIK.
