Much ado about nothing. Trump is a larger-than-life alpha. He doesn't mind invading space, even if it is a reserved countryman like a Japanese. Cultural insensitivity? Japanese people are often uncomfortable with handshakes as it's not part of their culture and automatically registers as a space invasion. Naturally, Abe is accustomed to it as a world leader, but it's hard to completely get over your early cultural programming. He was a bit uncomfortable, and aware that he's been alpha'd. So what.

Look, the anti-Trump media has embarked on a 4-year plus program of telling us that every single thing Trump does is bad, evil, insensitive and ineffective. I've never heard Abe speak English before. That was cool. So glad Japan is riding first class on the Trump Train.

The only thing remotely awkward about that was that it was prolonged for pics. The MSM and every blogger in the world is frothing at the gash to make every tiny thing this guy does some kind of scandal.

Honestly, I've never been a fan of Donald Trump. Never watched his shows, never paid any attention to him at all. But after witnessing the most concentrated and intense character assassination I've ever witnessed on a single human for the last two years, it only makes me more sympathetic to the guy.

When I first started traveling and living in SEA long ago I - unfortunately and shamefully - used to think like this and have this lame attitude for a time. You discover new things, immerse yourself in a new country, you become disconnected from the life and culture of your homeland and can very easily develop a terrible and hollow sense of superiority, patting yourself on the back for a "higher understanding" of the world. Then, you see others who don't quite have the understanding you do, whether they are tourists, foreign businessmen or whoever, and you think to yourself "what an uneducated fool, he doesn't get it", with a shake of the head and a self satisfied smirk.

It is really a dreadful and off-putting mentality. Fortunately it mostly goes away when an expat hits a certain age or length of time overseas. It takes time to realize there isn't any magic being farted out of the locals' asses and that it's ok to be an American, Canadian, Brit, etc and not get everything "right" all the time.

I found it interesting that Trump sat to the left of Shinzo Abe. Often, US presidents sit to the right of foreign leaders so that during handshakes they display the backside of their hands, as it is more dominating (google Bush shaking hands).

Is it safe to say OP is Asian? I can see that under some Asian cultures that Trump may of seemed condescending with the back side of the hand pat, especially for a Japanese. VV is a well repped member of the community; his insight is always welcome on the forum.
