I think the Mormons have their own singles/dating internet forums so he probably met her on there. So, she's likely Mormon also. I presume that the Venezuelan government told the Mormon church some time ago to stop sending gringo missionaries to the country. So, when they saw this guy they may have thought that we was testing the waters to start bringing North American missionaries and church leaders back into the country. A socialist government on the ropes cannot abide a perceived threat like that.

What this guy would probably say if you asked him why he went is that, "I prayed about it and I had a good feeling and was inspired to make the trip." I've known some Mormons and that's how they talk. Was he a missionary to a Spanish country? If so, he may speak Spanish. But, if he was a missionary to a Spanish country he should have known that he could get higher quality than that woman.
