Journalism has always, going back hundreds of years, been the preserve of the independently wealthy and connected.

I suspect that the US during that period you mention was an anomaly rather than the rule.

I was listening to a recent interview with Hugh Grant on Howard Stern show. Grant apparently has a really rocky relationship with the U.K. media and has brought legal action against them before. He said that the media in the U.K. holds parliament hostage and are kingmakers.

They don't really work for the people at all but are just another tool of the elites and always have been. They were hacking and violating privacy and the legal system was turning a blind eye because the journalists were following orders from the elite.
