Anyone have good stories of walking out/quitting a job?

A friend of mine ripped off his shirt hulk hogan style then walked around the store for a victory lap on his last day.

I have been thinking about how I am going to quit for a while now. I work in retail so on my last day i'll just be an ass to customers. I dont want to burn any bridges so I would keep it somewhat low key.

Yea, I used to work as a tech support guy for a satellite TV company. The work environment was truly horrifying (gossip, backstabbing, rude supervisors). I had enough one day and just walked out of the building with no prior notice. No regrets.

Nothing exciting. I had one job about 5 years ago that went real bad. I was working for an idiot. The company had a big changeover in management was wasn't the same company that hired me. I stormed out a few times, but always went back. I'd been searching for new jobs, but wasn't turning up anything. I stuck around and waited it out until they let me go, so I could get unemployment. When they finally told me they had to let me go, I wanted to ask if I could get a bottle of champagne for the outprocessing.

I gave notice at one place, years ago, and let the manager know I would not be putting up with his shit for the next two weeks. He made a big deal about calling me into the front office and handing me my final paycheck. I told him thanks, the new place had wanted me to start right away and I was just doing him a courtesy. So he did exactly what I wanted him to do.
And as for my asshole ex-manager? A year later his division was closed. Always thought the corporation just kept it open long enough to squeeze every last dime out of it.

I quit my first job registered with the state, when I was 16 yo. I was a grocery store bagger.

The manager explained the process to request vacation days off to the entire staff just before Halloween. Later that day I put in to have Christmas Eve and Day off, as well as NYE, while agreeing to work on Halloween.

On week of Christmas Eve I saw the updated schedule and he had me working all 3 days, even though I was the FIRST to put my time off cards in.

He told me tough shit (exact words), I told him he's a big fat cock sucker, I followed his exact directions and got fucked (my exact words), in front of a dozen customers. The guy was a prick who used scare tactics. He yelled as I walked out "You'll never work in the town again!" Yea buddy.

Walked out cursing him flipping him off.

One of my last bosses hired me, got threatened by my knowledge, so didn't train me and one fine day, he put me on a PIP ("Performance Improvement Plan"). The subtext of the PIP was "You better do A, B and C within 30 days and show me you're good at it."

There is a signature line on the PIP where I needed to sign. The signature doesn't imply agreement with the "challenge" but rather acknowledgment that I read it.

I didn't care. I still didn't sign it and the next day went into his office. Asked him two questions:

1. Do you think you could have done something else in order to make sure I could have done my job properly?
2. Is there a reason you went directly to my staff (4 young girls by the way) rather than come to me and hold me accountable?

He didn't have answers for me. So I then proceeded to say "I don't think this is a good fit for me then."

He made sure I left that day to save face instead of having me do 2 weeks. And even gave me another month's pay.

I don't necessarily recommend burning brides if you don't have to.

But for you younger guys, I will say that one of the most liberating feelings is spontaneously quitting a job you hate, the wind in your hair as you fly up the freeway with all your shit packed in your car, and heading off to start a new life with new opportunities.

Yeah, the employers lose and it's not exactly responsible. But sometimes a man just has to go now.

Quit a job, country, and family, in one swoop. None of it was malicious, none of it was dramatic. I was just gone, and ignored and blocked any requests and communications that came my way.

The HR of the company sent a letter instructing me to perform certain finalizing administrative tasks. I casually dropped it in the bin with the same curiosity as an advertising flyer.

It reminds you that you are free. You can go anywhere you want and associate with whoever you want. You are a free man by default, and the authority people have over you is only by your own consent. You can withdraw that consent at any time when it no longer suits your interests.

Hey man, this forum may be a bit misogynistic, but that's crossing the line.... I know what you meant.

But I agree with the rest of your post. On the topic of service jobs and corporate gigs, "it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I don't care".

Another thing. Since we have at-will employment in the US and you can be let go at anytime for any reason, i don't really see the need for "loyalty" or devotion to any one boss or company.

I facilitated my own departure from my last marketing job back in November 2013. A year before this my company had brought in a marketing director that was a godsend for me. The guy was a classy professional through and through and was always coming up with fresh ideas and putting the pedal to the medal. He took me under his wing and began pushing me hard to learn and train me up to become a manager. I didn't like him at first because it felt like he was picking on me, but the more I learned the more I began to see it was because he actually cared. I'd worked there for five years and never enjoyed it except for the time I spent under this guy.

So what was the problem? Other employees thought he was insane and refused to go along with his plans. They spread lies about his past and began filing joint complaints about how impossible he is to work for when in reality they were all just lazy and not willing to learn. Eventually the GM asked him to submit his resignation so he did. When I realized the company I had been with for so long just fired not only their best director but the best person I had ever worked for/with it took all the wind out of my sails. And not just for working at this company, but for corporate America as a whole. I saw first-hand how being great at what you do and putting your heart into your work could actually work against you in a corporate environment when you're surrounded by pieces of shit who hide behind the protection of HR so they don't have to work harder as long as they all agree that they shouldn't have to.

After he left I was seen as the only person that liked him and this alienated me from the rest of the office, placing me "on the radar". They brought in some new douche bag that would do what he was told, no more no less. The guy was a complete chode and I began not caring about my job far worse than before I worked with the awesome director. I got the warnings and write ups but this made me care even less. I had already begun planning what I would do once they fired me: finish my bachelors and move abroad, take unemployment if I had to.

On a Monday morning they called me into the conference room, gave me the news and had me sign a couple release forms. It took less than five minutes and by the time we were done the fat catty HR woman was waddling down the hallways with all my things in a big box that she had quickly dumped in while ushering me out the front door. When I walked out and tossed the box in the dumpster I felt like the weight of the world was off my shoulders. I drove straight to the university where I had been taking a class in the evening each semester and enrolled full time for the spring term and never looked back.

This may not be some grand "fuck you to the man" story but it's how I woke up from my corporate nightmare and initiated a plan that has nearly come to fruition. It's now been a year and a half since I was last employed, I graduate in six weeks and am getting my TESOL certification through my university over the summer. When I finish in August this will have taken almost two years for my plan of changing my life to culminate and I have this forum to thank for a lot of it.

^^^Great story, but did you ever consider jumping ship to join your former boss at his new post?

I went through a similar situation many moons ago. Had a success-minded boss and made it a point to keep in touch, should he end up in a better place and had a need/opportunity to build out a team of winners.

I was working in a call center that used to rip people off selling one of these no money down real estate programs. I'd occasionally overstep my bounds and refund someone against the company policy. One day I was called into the office for one of hte sessions where they listen to and review a call of yours. I was going to be fired.

They kept pushing me to sign documents basically so that they would have some ammunition to fight an unemployment claim or deny me. I kept refusing to sign anything, I was like if I'm fired fuck y'all why am I gonna do or sign anything. Finally they gave up and were making a big deal about walking me out escorted.

They walked me to my cubicle to grab my things and with everyone around me on the phones with customers I started screaming shit about their program and ripoff and walked out.

Yeah never take a customer service job that is call center related.

I rather beg for change on the street. It does nothing for your resume and they make a big deal out of everything.

Call centers definately suck but some are pretty laid back. Definatley not ideal for a career but just for a job during college or something you could do worse. Some of hte call centers I worked at literlaly every couple hours when the 15 minute break came up everyone would step out the back door and literally the entire office would just be sparking bowls in the smoking area outback. Tends to be a lot of younger people and a lot of females. Sometimes they are laid back and you can surf the internet and read while waiting for a call to come in.

Don't get me wrong they definately are not an ideal place to work but for a short term thing during college or during a summer or even during some downtime when your job hunting there are worse jobs to have.
