In photography one can trade portrait for time instead of exchanging money for skills. This usually occurs when the photographer and/or the model is an amateur and wants to develop their skills as well as break into the industry. A new photographer wouldn't really want to spend money to pay a model to shoot, likewise a new model would accept the photographs ( as long as they were good) as payment from the photographer.

This brings me to my question. Have any of you received free services from people in exchange for you acting as a reference and them developing their skills?

For example, Joe the local real estate broker wants to get a website made but doesn't have the skills to build one. Is there a way for him to find Timmy who is learning website creation and have him take on this little project. In exchange, little Timmy gets to put this "project" on his resume, gains experience in building a real website and gets a reference from Joe.

This to me feels like a win win situation as long as Joe is not super picky and Timmy has a good work ethic.

I was thinking of posting this type of request on craiglist / kijiji , but where else could one find these students?

In my experience, try to get something for free usually goes no where because the other party has no meaningful motivation.

I tried to start a business that way several years ago and ended up realizing that it was just better to earn some money and pay people to do what I wanted done.

well that means I have to go for a skin color and gender change, which would make me even greater than a white female cause of the trans status I would acquire. Then i'll just claim victimhood and acquire hipster betas to do my bidding.

Here are a few examples of free services from my experience:
1. Was offered publicity in local papers in exchange for doing an academic work (one of my side hustle).
2. Had a date clean my house in exchange for doing an excel task (she was "computer illiterate").
3. Exchanged lead information with a service.

All in all it is not common.
Don't expect to barter much, unless you have good connections, or be part of community that does that.
