I've attempted "direct" or semi-direct game about 2-3 times in my life moreso for social experimentation just to see what truth their is behind some of the PUA and evolutionary psych stuff (that and in the past I would occasionally purposely make myself do stupid things as a means of exposing myself to anxiety-inducing situations)

My conclusion is, it can "work" (one of the girls I tried it on made out with me and invited me to her place) but it's extremely high risk especially in this day and age, and there's absolutely no reason to attempt it except possibly for those who are to socially impared to make a conversation, you could get in a fight, get thrown out of a place, get accused of sexual harassment, etc. And only the easiest or drunkest of hos will likely appreciate it.

Even simply using good, appreciative eye contact without "saying much" at all can even work. It likely is a holdover from stone age times before formal spoken or written language was developed. (Though my stupid experiments with it did help me to understand just how much our animal instinct subconsciously does influence our interactions with other people).

The closest I would ever attempt to "direct game" now would be gently putting my hand on hers and seeing how she reacts; even letting her make the "first physical moves" beyond that IMO is a better option in this day and age for guys with even a moderate amount of skill.

(Ironically though I've had women use their own "direct game" on me on a few occasions, one time unzipping my pants under a table at a club and putting her hand on my dick within the first night of meeting her, and no bystanders thought of screaming "sexual assault", lol).
