Arab Americans Want To Make Themselves A New Minority Category For The 2020 Census

Background

Currently, there is no ethnic category for Arab Americans on the U.S. Census. This has led to a significant undercount of the community, creating barriers to many basic rights and services. While the Census Bureau estimates the number of Arab Americans in the United States at 1.8 million, the Arab American Institute estimates that the total is actually closer to 3.7 million. Federal data on Arab Americans is obtained through ancestry data from the American Community Survey, a yearly survey that collects economic, social, demographic and housing information from a small sample of the population.

The Problem

The creation of a coherent ethnic category for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region will have a positive impact on the treatment and services available to members of the Arab American community. The undercounting of Arab Americans has served as a barrier to representation, education, health, and employment for the community in the following ways: Language Assistance and Voting Rights: Section 203 of the Voting Rights Act protects minority language populations by ensuring the availability of foreign language ballots and translation services at polling places. The groups included are determined by the Census, excluding Arab Americans from protection under Section 203.

Moving Forward

Efforts are underway to support the addition of a Middle East and North Africa (MENA) category on the 2020 Census. A letter on behalf of a broad coalition of advocates and scholars was sent to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Chief Statistician, Dr. Katherine Wallman, in July 2013. The following year, in March, AAI hosted a meeting with the Director of the U.S. Census Bureau, Dr. John Thompson, to discuss the possibility of a new category that would encompass those from the MENA region. In July 2014, AAI presented research on the creation of a MENA category to the Interagency Working Group on Research on Race and Ethnicity at a meeting hosted by the Office of Management and Budget.

In October 2014, the U.S. Census Bureau announced that it would begin testing in 2015 of a Middle East and North Africa (MENA) category for possible inclusion on the 2020 Census. After a write-in campaign from community organizations representing groups that would be counted by the category, the Bureau stated that they had received a record number of positive comments in response to the Federal Register posting announcing the testing of the category at the Spring 2015 meeting of the National Advisory Committee.

Like usual, there is no difference between race or ethnicity...just be from any country in the Middle East or North Africa, and you too can have your very own persecuted minority status and jump on that MENAmerican gravy train today!

The last time this was done in 1980, we created a whole new Census category called ~Hispanics~ for the sole purpose of getting them some of that sweet, sweet, minority benefit $.

My guess is that Arabs from continental Asia don't want to be counted as "Asian" because then they're "over-represented," or they magically disappear or are implied to be white, like when the mainstream now talks about diversity in Silicon Valley.

Arabs from continental Africa are probably fine being counted as "African." I knew one who got into medical school because of that technicality. The mainstream may have wised up to that now though, going for "sub-Saharan African."

Yes, it's all just angling for identity politics benefits. I actually don't have a problem with this. Let all the groups divide up into sub categories like this. Makes it easier to identify "problem areas" when it comes to crime and other issues such as welfare leeching and terrorism.

In addition people from the subcontinent should not be thrown together with northeast and southeast asians either. They have way more in common with people from the middle east than northeast or southeast asians.

All good and well if your society is willing to do something with that information.

But bring up crime or welfare statistics as divided on racial lines in most western nations and you will be lynched by the left while the cuckservatives politely look away.

All good and well if your society is willing to do something with that information.

It's actually kind of useful if you're involved in business and real estate too. It identifies potential "hot spots" to keep far away from to reduce your own personal risk and liability.

The fact that not all Arabs are Muslim is precisely the reason that Muslims and progressives will be after this recognition with bated breath. Because Muslims will be free to persecute anyone in the Dar al-Harb and when backlash inevitably arrives they can simply claim it as a hate-crime against Arabs.

The frothing mouthed screams of the left that anti-muslim sentiment was racism never quite hit home, because not all Arabs are muslim and not all muslims are Arab. Now, Arab will be the new code for muslim. If a mosque burns down it will be reported as an anti-Arab attack. Abracadabra. Racism. Anyone supporting it will be lynched. If a restaurant owner fires a Muslim for refusing to serve pork it will be reported as anti-Arab discrimination. Abracadabra. Racism. Anyone supporting it will be lynched.

Absolutely not, the people from the sub-continent are light years apart from common cultural/social thinking and even genetically different then people from the Middle East. They don't even recognize or treat each other as people who are similar, IN THE ACTUAL SO CALLED MIDDLE EAST REGIONS! For example, Pakistani's have been banned from entering countries like Libya, and are looked down upon in the Arabian peninsula region; and people from the "sub-continent" are usually treated with hostility there.

There is also huge differences in cultural and social set ups, interpreting the world and ways that the two groups look at the world, and the two couldn't be more different in such a regard. But people from the "Middle East", is a bullshit idea and term, since the "Middle East", is an idiotic inaccurate and confusing term to begin with, since it includes many "non-Muslim" and non-"Arabic" groups and regions not stereotypically "Middle Eastern".

Splitting of hairs. The entire region was defined as the near east back in the day when moutainous impassible terrain divided the near east (middle east and subcontinent.) from the far east. There's a reason why NE and SE Asia was not "discovered" for so long. It was not accessible apart from the remote and heavily militarized silk road.

The subcontinent on the other hand always was a part of the middle east and western trade. Like I said, the subcontinent has way more in common with the middle east culturally speaking than many want to admit.

The current political and social climate puts the subcontinent in an inferior position to the middle east but the cultural roots are there. Gulf arabs have treated people from the subcontinent poorly but there's also an ancient mentality which allows such treatment.

When the islamicization of the subcontinent happened back when islam was first founded the culture of the subcontinent and the Indian people was lost and subverted under that of the cultures we call the "middle east" today then later the British.

Depends on the area of the subcontinent - northern India has a big middle eastern influence. There's a lot of Arabic and Persian words in the languages spoken in northern India. Before the British arrived, the Mughal emperors of India spoke Persian.

Many parts of Southern India were never conquered by Muslims, but they became very conservative over the last 1000 years. There's many ancient statues of people banging in Southern India and women used to walk around topless. A lot of non-Muslim Indians feel a disdain for Arab culture and don't wish to be associated with them. Pakistanis are a different kettle of fish all together - before 1947 they were Indian Muslims and they are the descendants of Hindus who converted to Islam. A lot of them secretly wish they were Arab....many Pakistanis have such a huge amount of self hatred that they will refuse to admit their ancestors are Hindu.

Many Arabs have a very negative opinion on Pakistanis and a lot of them wouldn't piss on a Pakistani if he was burning to death.

In regards to the OP, the majority of Arabs in the US are Christian and I've personally met Jewish Arabs before.

Influence does not mean conquest or any lasting genetic or ancestral heritage. Buddhism certainly came from India too but it morphed over time with NE and SE asian characteristics. It was transmitted by missionaries.

Do you know why despite all that religious influence noone in southeast asia or China actually looks Indian aside from very recent immigrants unlike let's say Sri Lanka or Bangladesh?

In regards to the OP, the majority of Arabs in the US are Christian and I've personally met Jewish Arabs before.

While that may be true historically and from a socio-political point of view I go by appearance and attitude of the people I meet in day to day life. Indians have a similar demeanor to arabs.

They eat food that is not remarkably different in seasoning and spice.
Have similar preferences in women.
Tries to push their own caste system on everyone they meet.
Tend to also view others not in their tribe in the same way as well.
Arrogant and generally argumentative personalities.
Same colonial mentality.
Follow the same religious and political preferences for the most part.
Hindus may differ religiously from muslims but general cultural attributes remain similar in many ways to general arab culture.
Same type of extreme thirst.

I'm not casting aspersions on indians raised in the west or truly identify as western but this is what i've seen abroad.
