That would be what we're referencing, yes.

I only ever saw the original Full Metal Alchemist, but they did have that story arc with the dad who combined his daughter with the dog.

Brotherhood is much better. Highly recommend it. (The story you're talking about is in Brotherhood as well).

I would assume that eventually researchers will use this as a stepping stone as they gain more focus on the needed organ, and require less and less of the "creature." Ideally, you'd want to grow the needed tissue/organ with minimal supporting tissue necessary. But you first have to focus on producing the organ. This kind of stuff is never pretty at first. Most medical research isn't. It does raise questions ethically, but in the end, if it allows us to grow a person a new liver, kidney in an incubator, and that organ will be a perfect DNA match that minimizes complications and the need for lifelong anti-rejection drugs, then the price may be worth it.

Watch Brotherhood it's infinitely better in my humble opinion.

Edit: God damn it someone beat me to it. So co-sign the above.

So.... this combined with that penis attachment surgery thread, I can order an elephant penis spliced with my dna and have it installed later in the week?
Neat.

I agree that Brotherhood is better and it is so because it fallows manga, while the original series strayed in middle of the story line because manga was unfinished, but the show needed more episodes.

I would actually recommend to read manga even more than watching the anime for this particular franchise.

Where does it stop, a half human half pig creature?

Ha, if only you knew!

'Humans evolved after a female chimpanzee mated with a pig': Extraordinary claim made by American geneticist

Quote:Scientists currently suppose that chimpanzees are humans' closest living evolutionary relatives, a theory amply backed by genetic evidence.
However, as Dr McCarthy points out, despite this genetic similarity, there are a massive number of divergent anatomical characteristics distinguishing the two species.

These distinguishing characteristics, including hairless skin, a thick layer of subcutaneous fat, light-coloured eyes, protruding noses and heavy eyelashes, to name but a few, are unmistakeably porcine, he suggests.
There are also a number of less obvious but equally inexplicable similarities between humans and pigs in the structure of the skin and organs.
Indeed, pig skin tissues and heart valves can be used in medicine because of their similarity and compatibility with the human body.

Dr McCarthy says that the original pig-chimp hook up was probably followed by several generations of 'backcrossing', where the offspring of that pairing lived among chimps and mated with them - becoming more like chimps and less like pigs with every new generation.
(...)
In its conclusion he writes: 'I must admit that I initially felt a certain amount of repugnance at the idea of being a hybrid. The image of a pig mating with an ape is not a pretty one, nor is that of a horde of monstrous half-humans breeding in a hybrid swarm.

'But the way we came to be is not so important as the fact that we now exist. As every Machiavellian knows, good things can emerge from ugly processes, and I think the human race is a very good thing. Moreover, there is something to be said for the idea of having the pig as a relative.

Mindblown

Pseudo-scientific nonsense. Pigs have 38 chromosomes, chimps have 48, no way to cross-breed. This is just as ridiculous as the aquatic ape theory. People just can't accept humans are unique among the creatures in nature.

Reminds me a little of 'The Island of Dr. Moreau', although that was surgical procedures rather than genetic engineering.

RE: Scientists Create Chimeras From Human-Animal Hybrid Embryos
I saw a very creepy section of a documentary on History Channel (or similar) involving the Russian Experiments in the Revival of Organisms.

A dog is decapitated and its head hooked up to a machine that pumps oxygenated blood through the head. The dog head is then shown looking around, responding to sound and visual stimulus as if the dog was still alive (I guess it was). Also shown was a dog with the head of a puppy grafted on the side of its neck. Both dog and puppy head were shown happily drinking out of separate water bowls.

It's creepy but also pretty harmless. What's they worst they're gonna do to humans with this knowledge? The odd organ transplant and put dicks on a few trannies.

Messing with genes and DNA is a whole other level that is very concerning.
