Works that you consider to be genius
The other day Paracelsus and I had a discussion about whether George R R Martins' book A Song of Ice and Fire is a work of genius. He said no and I said yes. Someone also mentioned Harry Potter as genius.

What do you consider genius? Whether it is painting, music, literature or movies?

For me Animal Farm, A Song of Ice and Fire, Pulp Fiction are somewhere on my list.

Could it be about inventions? The bicycle is a brilliant invention, so simple and efficient.

Also the AK-47, and the helicopter are particular favourites.

Agree with this as a benchmark. Below are some that come to my mind:

Music- Stairway to Heaven (mainstream, but genius)
Film- Life is Beautiful (making a comedy about the Nazi's and World War II was brilliant)
Literature- Camp of the Saints (for Jean Raspail's prophetic accuracy in 1973, and disturbingly seeing it come to fruition before our very eyes)

I love Pulp Fiction but I wouldn't classify it as a work of genius… More an anthology of accumulated knowledge DJ'd into a masterpiece… On second thoughts maybe that classifies as genius but I'm not convinced.

In mathematics: Cantor's theory of infinite sets and Godel's Incompleteness theorems. Both men had genuinely new ideas and saw much further than their contemporaries. In music: Bach's 24 fugues from WTC. He is peerless for his creative writing within highly constrained forms.

Most of the books mentioned in the "Famous books that you thought sucked..." thread are absolutely genius, and it breaks my heart to see them shit-talked.

Basically, the canon is genius. That's a pretty fail-safe guide.

Modernity, I guess it has to stand the test of time. I could go on and on about filmmakers. Fellini, Antonioni, Godard, Rohmer, Bresson, Melville, Bergman, Herzog, Tarkovsky, Bunuel, Mizoguchi, Ozu, Capra, Ford, Scorsese, Altman.

Top of the heap of the moderns is Bob Dylan. And in sports, Roger Federer. For economics and philosophy, Hoppe.

(I mean that, taken as a collective, their life works are genius)

The Kalash took some inspiration from the ground-breaking German machine-gun, Sturmgewehr 44. Both were brilliant engineering inventions.

Oddest of the bunch is a book called Red or Dead by David Peace... The book is written in a repetitive, "just the facts"-style. It lists attendances and line-ups for every single game that Bill Shankly managed at Liverpool. A cynic would say that the author went nuts with the "copy and paste" function on Word, or that it was written by an rudimentary computer program...

^ I know that's not the best advertisement, but I've never seen anything like it. Genius. I couldn't put it down.
