A "sheng nu," or "leftover woman," is a derogatory term for an unmarried woman over 25. The film shows the pressure these women face from their parents and society—and often, themselves—to marry young, and then leads up to the poignant moment where they stand up to their parents' pressure.





Last year, Prestige International skin care brand SK-ll launched #changedestiny, an ongoing global campaign to inspire and empower women to shape their own destiny. This year, they've continued the theme with "Marriage Market Takeover," created by Swedish agency Forsman & Bodenfors in its first ad campaign in China.
It used to be that female beauty marketing was all about fear—fear of living up to an ideal, where the product was positioned as the solution that would make you feel better about yourself. But that philosophy has changed thanks to mountains of marketing that have made the point that looking good and feeling good are two different things. This campaign is another milestone on the road to turning around the very meaning of the beauty, and this time, it's international.
The marriage market is a place where Chinese parents essentially advertise children as marriage potential, listing their height, weight, salary, values and personality. In some cases, women are unaware that their parents have listed them on the market.
SK-II took over a traditional marriage market and created a huge, beautiful, night-lit installation created with its own version of "marriage ads," which were actually messages from hundreds of independent women saying they want to be in control of their own destiny, and could actually be happy without being married.
We get to see the wonderful reactions of the parents who, earlier in the film, were downright harsh—calling their daughters unattractive or worse, while sitting right beside them. After reading the display, they change their tone, moved by the words and beautiful photos of their daughters presumably wearing SK-II products.
If any were still backwards curmudgeons, we didn't get to see them in the film.
This is a powerful message, and one that's needed in many places. When I lived in Japan, unmarried women over 25 were still called "Christmas cakes," a reference to being discounted after Dec. 25. In Russia, I understand they're called "old maids," no food analogy.
But with women delaying marriage the world over to focus on education and careers, the stigma is going to fall. It'll only be a matter of time, and some well-placed messaging.

This article has been doing the rounds on Facebook; ironically, most of my contacts sharing it aren't even Chinese but European, of course of the SJW set. Having Googled this article, it's been published by the usual suspects — BBC, Deutsche Welle, HuffPost.

The few Chinese I know of here seem to be somewhat insulated from that pressure than back home — they're basically free to ride the carousel and chase their careers with greater impunity — but they do certainly feel it, and in their families' eyes its even worse tiding than coming back with a F on a maths exam.

Stop raising girls like they're celebrities who deserve a celebrity husband just for existing and maybe your basic daughter will say "I do" instead of "fuck off" when she's proposed to. Maybe she'll actually want to be married and want to have children instead of believing her worthless degree, joke of a career, and carousel riding are what makes her a "real woman" that any guy would be lucky to hook up with.

That video was intense. When that mom cut down her daughter for being ugly I laughed.

Hard red pill lessons in that video at the start. All went sideways in a hurry though when that faux protest stuff was at the end. I did not buy its honesty and it was likely staged as hell.

This video will go viral and be all over .Mic and ATTN and other clickbait news sites. There is a important undertone that women in the West won't pick up on. The Chinese women rebel against the notion they need marriage to fulfill themselves, true, yes they do.

These women understand they are not entitled to shit and that being "picky" will cause them to die alone with cats. These women all know this full well and accept their fate.

No man in China is going to come around and simp around to marry them. These Chinese women know that it is a life of being a mistress or alone. This likely still keeps some feminine traits still in place versus women in the West who know that they can swallow 1000 cocks and still have men fighting to put a ring on their fingers.

I don't think the intense pressure to marry creates a healthy social environment in China. I think there's a reasonable middle point between the slut-empowering and anti-marriage culture of the West and the short-sighted notion of "marry the first guy you meet for his wealth so your family can reap the benefits". It has nothing to do with traditional family values - it's a business transaction strictly concerning money and face and I don't see how that creates a better place for children to grow up than what we have in the West.

All the girls I have dated in China constantly get hounded by their parents and family on this issue and these are some of the sweetest and smartest girls I've ever met. That kind of stress can really do a number on them. That said these are attractive girls with decent jobs that have a lot of options, at least for a while.

The idea of going in there and marrying up some sweet 19 year old girl when you're 35-40 sounds attractive to me though, but have to find a way to stay as far from her extended family as possible.

I've dealt with one of these chicks before. I walk into a bar and open a 3 set. She came over here to do something that sounded important at a research university. When I asked for her number she looked at me like she was shocked because she had told me how old she was, 24, and I still asked. Met up a few weeks later after she ghost for the bang. Basically what happened is that this company is probably butthurt China banned imports of these goods so they are firing shots back after a decade. Doubtful people in China will even see this video. Additionally, the first sentence of that article claims this brand is Chinese--FALSE! It is a Japanese company (owned by P&G).

My favorite part is when the woman @ 1:41 with tears in her eyes says "yearns for love" and "Yes. I want real love" and then not 2 minutes later @ 3:01 she says "Even if I'm alone. I will be happy, confident and have a good life".
I don't have too much experience with Chinese women but she looks 35-40ish. Her ship has long since sailed.

Just simply having a decent job that pays $1000 (USD) per month puts her equal to or high and above the success of at least 95% of her male peers. The men that would satisfy her now ridiculous standards (a man who earns more than her) have untold options.

Worse yet, with no concern for the future and a full expectation that a man will eventually bail her out, few of these women save much cash, but instead travel and enjoy life in their twenties and thirties. Those who travel and have strong English skills generally acquire a taste for foreign alpha cock after which they have no appetite for your typical beta Chinese male.

Meanwhile, men in the same situation are not travelling, but rather hustling, saving as much as possible of that $500 (USD) they earn each month working for an asshole boss who makes them miserable, because they don't have the luxury of living the good life. So true. Interesting confluence of dynamics going on in China in the past decade (let's say 2008-now). First, post-financial crisis, you had this contrarian narrative playing out that China was ascendant, that the west aint shit, that the true economic opportunities are back home. Lots of overseas educated Chinese flocking back home ("hai gui" or "returning turtles"). Certainly in finance with the opening of up of the Shanghai and Shenzhen markets to greater foreign access, more domestic big-market companies listing, etc there was a lot of promise. Also in tech, with the nascent and rapidly growing software scene (apps in China >>> American apps). And while those growth trends still play out, the narrative very suddenly shifted circa 2014 - Alibaba made a big splash but the Shanghai stock market crashed; capital flight became a huge problem, and growth has slowed. The long-term trend is that more and more Chinese people are emigrating to the west. The rates of ex-migration are exponential (just look at the overseas student boom in the US, Canada, UK, etc and the real estate bubbles). I used to think I needed to go east to bang a lot of fobs. But in NYC, there are so many young fobs in their early 20s that most asian nightlife is now dominated by them (go to the notorious and overhyped Circle - it's now half Korean half FOB chinese). Why is this? Probably because, as Suits said, the spoils of have all been gobbled up. China as presently constituted is a nightmare rat-race for both men and women. No wonder everybody wants to get out. Women know that if they get a white collar job here, life can be pretty good, and the dating market for them is pretty wide open. As presently constructed China is not an emerging market, but a middle income market that has hit a production ceiling. It still has room to grow, but it's used up all the low hanging fruit, and it can't unlock more growth without major reforms (many of which are hard to do in the political and oligarchical structure of the society).

Ironically? That was the intent. Seth_Rose already uncovered that SK-II products are banned in China, and there is no earthly reason for a for-profit makeup company to start firing shots at a market which it's locked out of.

When will this happen in western society?

I cringe when the 25+ crowd suckers in some beta to marry them. What are these guys thinking? "Power Couples?"

Although I do contemplate whether these guys will outbreed us. Unfortunately, western society doesn't place a premium on virginity and youth, so were are stuck with carousel riders for the future mothers of our children, combined with a misandrist family court system.

It really takes a collective movement for males to shun these women. Chinese men have certain standards, as do I, on age and virginity of the women we marry. If western males don't adopt these standards, we will be progressively seeing the end times.
