We are forgetting an important aspect, I think, here. Females do not flock to the alpha monkey or the alpha wolf of the group because he can screw them with impunity; rather, he gets to screw them with impunity because of the qualities he brings. There is no 'alpha staying home to fuck monkeys while the betas go hunt...the hunter hunts, then gets the reward. So really it is never just about being able to get the female, the female has to want to give it up because she sees the best option out of all the rest.
