Today I did a little research on cost of living in Eastern European cities on numbeo. I think the results are interesting enough to share them here, maybe to save others some work.

I took Budapest as a reference (I lived there for a couple of years) and compared mostly the other big cities, but a few smaller as well.

I list the difference in prices the same way numbeo does, but I neglected the decimals and just rounded the percentages, e.g.:
- Consumer Prices in Budapest are 6.72% higher than in Warsaw -> "7" in the spreadsheet,
- Consumer Prices Including Rent in Budapest are 3.95% lower than in Warsaw -> "-4" in the spreadsheet.

To make it simple: plus (green) is good (cheaper) and minus (red) is bad (more expensive).

I also included the "Local Purchase Power". So according to numbeo people in Budapest have a 28% lower purchase power than people in Warsaw but a 102% higher purchase power than people in Odesa.

I grouped the cities according to the criteria "member of EU", "aspiring member of EU" (Belgrade) and "rest", as well as population.

Of course, numbeo is not totally accurate, but I think it can give a pretty good indication of price differences.

Pretty neat.

A while back I was thinking about doing a big write up on the exact cost differentials between the West/East and inner-euro cities, but never got around to it. Would be cool to have cost differentials for a whole stack of cities to help people decide where they want to move for the most cost-effective relocation.

I tried to simulate your format, just left out the first (consumer prices) and third (rent prices) row, since they are mostly redundant if you already have the second row "Consumer Price Including Rent"

Some questions:

• did you use this page http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/ran...urrent.jsp as your data source?
• do you have ideas regarding how to include some measure of female attractiveness and where to get that data? My first thoughts would be obesity rates, general health... bra cup sizes could be obtainable, but are most probably misleading, since the biggest driving factor of bra cup size is being fat...

Don't know where did they get their figures for Poland, but knowing quiet well Warsaw and Krakow, those figures are wrong.

The difference in local purchasing power between both cities is quiet ridiculous. Krakow is way cheaper than Warsaw if you stay out of tourist places (that normal people do).

In Budapest people have -25% less purchasing power than in Krakow? Can't believe it.

These Numbeo figures come from users entering the data - in the case of Cracow, 200 users entered data (see bottom of this image)


Not the best method, but it holds certain advantages over using official figures (which are often skewed for political reasons, and which are mostly on the federal level and not broken down to regional/city level)

Using different data sources, one can easily come to different numbers - even within Numbeo:



But the general direction seems to be correct, and we don't need to be exact here.

Yes, but for potential expats, we really need to move to the hot spots/inner city places.
