Lightbulb We need an alternative to Twitter, what will it be?
Making this thread here, because there are some interesting possibilities.

Some ideas:

Roosh talked about a GNU social node:

https://gnu.io/
http://www.skilledtests.com/wiki/List_of..._Instances

I don't know much about the GNU system, hopefully you guys can fill us in.

Then there is blockchain technology, which definitely should be over looked. The technology behind cryptocurrency can be used to make decentralized application -- like BitTorrent works.

http://twister.net.co/

This one uses Ethereum. https://github.com/yep/eth-tweet. You could buy 0.0001 Ethereum for a cents or two and run this.

---------

Whatever alternative we choose, it ought to be decentralized. That is the best way to ensure freedom of speech is maintained.

Here's a list of GNU twitter clones that are active:

https://gnusocial.no/main/public
https://quitter.se/main/public
https://quitter.no/main/public
https://quitter.is/main/all

It looks like you can just sign up and start tweeting.

Well, we can rule out Quitter right away

The best way to go for us with the GNU Social thing is to start our own "instance" (that's what they call them, Quitter and the various others). The good thing is no matter which one you belong to you can still see, follow, etc all users on any GNU Social "instance".

Here's a GNU Social "instance" that looks friendly to our views: https://freezepeach.xyz/main/public

Thing is though there's not much happening on the platform, mostly TumblrFucks and various other nerds.

If we treated it as a platform to mostly just talk to each other then it would work I suppose, but even then I don't think people will be hanging out on GNU Social in hopes of seeing one "tweet" every 30 minutes+. What makes twitter work is the volume of users, the variety and flow of content. There's just no reason to on GNU right now for most people.

I don't think there will be a direct replacement of Twitter. Even before the SJW takeover they were having a drop off in tweets from long time members.

Maybe something will gain popularity, but I think it'll be something different altogether.

Witter.
Minimum of 500 characters and maximum of one proper noun per post, not counting repetitions.

Let's dispel the rumour that Witter would not be a roaring success... A roaring success is exactly what it would be!

Why don't we make our own Twitter replacement? It's not like development would be expensive and server costs are moot for such a service anyway.

Heck even make it a proper 160 characters instead of the stupid 140.

A user on the forum created a GNU Social node for us, but I haven't met him and don't think he's been vouched for. He's free to share it in this thread, but I think trust needs to be established before jumping on a new service.

As Roosh mentioned I've created http://freespoken.org

SSL certificate is under way.

I am an experienced web developer (programmer, designer, marketer) for roughly a decade now, so I intend to develop this site in full (design wise, technical maintenance, feature development) once I see it's picking up even the slightest of traffic.

I may also shift away from gnusocial in the future if that will be needed, since they require to commit every change to the code, and if the site grows custom features will definitely be needed, and we may have to haggle with them for approval.

I can program everything by myself so depending on their license if it doesn't fit the site's needs is not necessary.

I've been red pill in my core beliefs way before the term was coined or this community was formed, been living the work-travel-women lifestyle for roughly 15 years now (40+ yo). Spent a decade in Poland and I'm currently in Manila although should get back to Central/Eastern Europe within a few weeks.

I was not too active on political issues but a few events in the past couple of years shocked me and urged me to get more involved, and I see this as an opportunity.

These events were mainly the Julien Blanc saga (yes he's a certified douchebag but the blindness of the media, the mob, and world governments(!) were simply a shock to me), the refugees open door and shut eyes policy, and of course the recent Roosh vs. the media ordeal.

While I obviously can't convince anyone to trust me, trusted members of the forum can contact me via PM and we can talk via voice or video if you wish.

Rules of the site would basically be full free speech with the exception of incitement to illegal activity and senseless foul language.

As for the latter I am toying with the idea of a 'shaming system' which will mark offending posts. As foul language is used in this culture war almost exclusively, and excessively by SJW's, it can prove hilarious to watch this unfold.

As I know internet marketing very well, I know it's a more than a full time job to popularize a site like this on my own. Therefore it needs to start with an endorsement of this community.

Once again, the moment I see even the slightest increase in activity there, I will dedicate considerable efforts to develop the platform. I've designed sites that won (small) design awards and I've programmed web applications for international companies from scratch. So competence is not an issue here.

Feel free to ask questions or contact me via PM. You can sign up on the site with bogus details and through an alternative IP initially (e.g. public wifi). I'll also update the thread once the SSL cert is installed.

Some of these gnu social nodes are very slow. All that I have loaded so far have taken a long time to load images.

Then perhaps GNU nodes are out of the question. Unless someone knows how to make a faster one.

RE: We need an alternative to Twitter, what will it be?
I created Freet.co if anyone is interested in checking it out.

I've been working on it last night and today. It runs GNU Social with "Qvitter" which gives it a similar interface to Twitter while also being mobile friendly. I have it setup to not log any IP addresses, a working email address is not required, and registration takes about 30 seconds.

I found it uses a minimum of 500 MB/ram so it is not lightweight. If a few people are interested in using it then I will upgrade the server specs. If anyone would like to setup a similar one I can help via PM.

RE: We need an alternative to Twitter, what will it be?
Ok Roosh has signed up so that's a start.

I installed the Qvitter interface, and should be making some changes today so to make it look nicer and more proprietary.

I should also do something more creative with the background image and make some hosting changes today (and add SSL).

If you see any functionality problems (bugs) please post them here or just [email protected], same goes for suggestions.

If you have a suggestion for a site slogan, please post it here as well.

I was thinking something in the lines of "We don't censor to please our shareholders". Maybe add ".. and watch our stock go down regardless" just so to create a small initial provocation to warm things up a bit.

Why is anyone interested in using Twitter at all? What's the point of using Twitter, Facebook, etc? As we've seen, they simply censor everything anyways, plus whatever you post is stored in vast archives by the NSA. Honestly, it seems full of cons, with few pros.

The NSA can theoretically get to any platform since the webhost may be allowing them access to any site's database (knowingly or unknowingly). Even if you host at home they may be monitoring communications via your ISP. So there's no fighting that one.

The point of using a public platform to share your views is that the 'other side' spreads his views vigorously, and this can eventually affect the public vote.

You may decide not to give a shit and just ignore it all, as I have, and then one day I wake up discovering that the borders that are supposed to protect me and those I hold dear are wide open and anyone can waltz in, while the world is busy fighting "extremely dangerous menaces to humanity" like Roosh or Julien Blanc.

Malo, I'm curious what made you choose GNU Social over pump.io? I only started looking into this a couple of months ago and haven't done much other than browse the source code for each. I'm not totally clear on what the differences are yet, other than pump.io seems to be javascript-based while gnu social is php.

Twitter is where everyone is. Where do you suggest I read what Trump or Vox Day or Milo or countless others? They're all on Twitter, they haven't set up a alternate like Roosh has.

Also Twitter is simply the most convinent way of hearing what the daily chatter is. If I want to know what everyone is saying about say Lebron James I can simply type that in and see what everyone is tweeting about him. No other site gives me that. Thats why lazy journalists just use Twitter instead of interviewing people face to face. Twitter is the ultimate watercooler.

Twitter is just more fun. I like the setup and the format. Its a shame its been run by such ideologues and morons. It really is a great site.

Javascript is on the client side (browser), PHP on the server side, so they do not replace, but complement one another.

I'll have a look at pump.io but this is not a priority at the moment since we already have a full platform that is relatively tested and is running and functioning.

The priority is doing some technical finishes (hosting etc), making it look more inviting and most importantly spreading the word.

If pump.io proves more useful we can migrate later (I can code the database migration myself so that shouldn't be a problem).

Nah I was just curious. Did not mean to imply you should do anything different. I agree if you have a platform it's not worth it to switch technologies.

pump.io uses node.js, a javascript runtime typically used to enable server-side applications written using javascript.

^ Ok thanks for the correction! I haven't visited pump.io yet so didn't see that they use node.js, I was just referring to the typical setup js is being used in. My bad for not making the distinction..

Update:

Moved the site to a better host, added SSL certificate, made small improvements to the design.

Will keep improving the site as it picks up some traffic.

If I'm understanding GNU Social properly, it should not matter which service any one particular person uses so long as they are federated. At this point, anything that draws users away from twitter will be beneficial.
