Nike canceled the contract due to "anti-gay" comments

Pacquiao will likely be fighting his final fight against Timothy Bradley in April. Much of the value which Nike derives from him comes from him wearing Nike trunks and shoes in the ring. If he retires, he could still make money from an endorsement deal from Nike, but I doubt it would be anywhere near as lucrative as the endorsement deals he has had as an active boxer. He made a lot of money off of Nike and Nike made a lot of money off of him. If Under Armour or Everlast were to drop Alvarez, it would be an entirely different story, as Alvarez has a solid ten to fifteen years left in the sport and he would be losing a ton of money if that happened.

He's currently running for Senator in the Philippines, and given the conservative and catholic views prevalent there, I doubt anybody will give a shit.
If anything, it will increase his chances. By apologizing he got even more publicity again, making sure everyone knows he's a practicing and sincere Christian. His voters will like that, and I think he couldn't care less about the money at this point.

It was Nike's good right to terminate the business relationship, if they stand to lose money from being associated with him after that.
Global corporations don't have political views or principles, they care about the money, and only the money.
They are all about numbers, not opinions, and thus will go with the mainstream/majority view in order not to alienate any customers and lose market share.

I'm with 262 I don't really see it either, with these giant corporations its all about the money. Some certainly will co-opt these SJW ideas into their brand and marketing but I wouldn't say they're pushing them like they hope to influence people's views. They just see things moving leftwards like we do and want to establish a "progressive" reputation to remain popular, virtue signalling can convince the masses of their 'goodness', for most it isn't ideologically driven.

Also, SJWs are far more consumerist, so it pays to target them and align with them more.

I think this is actually backwards: If corporation buck the current social trends then they would risk alienating customers and losing out on sales.

I have no data but I'd guess they're core audience is left-leaning and endorsing Manny who said some negative(but mostly true) statements about gays would've made them look bad by association.

A corporation will say anything to make itself look good in the public eye so that people won't feel bad if they buy from them. It's all about making money like VVV and Phoenix alluded to already.

I stand with Manny - not only because I'm a believer as well, but...well, what he said is just common sense. Men were obviously created to sleep with females and vice versa, end of story. Only reason he was let go was because he's not racking up money for Nike boxing. He was expendable. Manny getting older, just a reason to let him go. Nike wins both ways, cut ties without the backlash and they get to look like they give a fuck. Also imagine manny was making millions for Nike like Jordan, you think Nike would let him go?
