The forum has been leaning conservative the last view years. It's plain as day that the people(in this thread and elsewhere) don't care that Antonin Scalia is dead: They're upset that someone that holds the same political and ideological views as them is no longer in a position of power.

If Congressional Republicans fold and allow Obama to push through another liberal justice it will obviously be very bad for the country, but will actually help Trump in the polls. It will be a major rallying issue for the right.

Also, even if another liberal makes it on the court, if Trump is elected he could pull an FDR and propose legislation that would reform the Supreme Court. If his public support is high enough, and if he manages to bring in new and fresh Trump Republicans on his coattails in the mid terms of 2018 then something like this could be a real possibility.

It's kind of sad that the court is divided 5-4 on many important issues, and that people get all worked up about getting someone from their "side" appointed to push things one way or another.
It basically implies that the Supreme Court is made up of partisan hacks who put their own personal ideology first, and any sense of legal objectivity a very distant second.
When I have read some of the opinions, I get the distinct feeling that Justices, both liberal and conservative, decide a case based on their personal prejudices, and then go hunting for whatever bullshit legal sounding justification they can throw together to rationalize it and give the appearance that they have made a reasoned and impartial decision based in the law.

Fortunately, FDR's "Court Packing" attempt was shot down. He was pissed when the Supreme Court killed his National Recovery Act.

I had a lot of respect for Scalia. As a conservative, I could always count on him. I had just sat down on my computer and saw the Fox Alert pop up stating that he died.

I suppose this will make the election cycle somewhat more interesting.

This country has lost one of its greatest legal minds. No one on the SCOTUS knew the law like Scalia.

In terms of an appointment, I haven't seen a precedent for a vacancy on the court this late in a lame duck president's term. This is likely the biggest issue around the election. Either the next president has this as their first order of business upon taking the oath in January, or Obama can tilt the election with his nomination. By that I mean that by pushing a hard left appointment, swing voters could break for the GOP. A more moderate appointment could make a contentious confirmation a negative for Republicans.

Then there's the effect on Senatorial elections. The Senate confirms appointments, and with more Republicans up for reelection this year, that could help their cause.

This election just got a lot more interesting.

Whats was wrong with Scalia? I'm from Canada, and our supreme court is full of SJWs. This country would probably be in much better place if we had a court full of Scalia's. What is even more shocking than his death is the amount of Americans ridiculing this man. This country is so divided.

Regardless of how you feel about the man's ideas or conservativism, if you're an American you shouldn't be disrespecting the Supreme Court as an institution by lauding the death of one of its justices.

If Sotomayor died you wouldn't find me saying "good riddance," if only because these people are legal experts who very often look past personal opinions to check our rampaging government and defend this country's founding document.

Sometimes you might not agree with them, but they serve one of the most professional insitutions left in America's government. To celebrate any of their deaths is classless and immature. These liberals celebrating Scalia's death and calling him a piece of shit because he has different views is ridiculous and sad. At least to me.

When I heard that he died while on a hunting trip in Texas, the first question I asked was whether or not Cheney was there.

Since they already passed the big spending bill last month, there's nothing for Obama to leverage to get another vile pick shoved through. He'll have to pick someone to appease the Republicans or the seat will remain vacant.

As far as any precedent goes regarding a lame duck in his final year, he's still the president, and it's still within his powers to appoint justices. Since he can be certain that his girl shrillery will win, he'll have to proceed.

Ginsburg and Kennedy are both well into their 80s. Chances are high the next president will replace one or both.
