On a serious note. NYC does have an issue with crane accidents. They have had a few over the years and looks like the recent weather may have affected the crane. Which is troubling because they're supposed to be attached to the building along their entire length using clamps.

Heard that. I was staying a few blocks away at the time. I was in my hotel room changing at the time with my window left open, when I heard a loud series of bangs. Since I couldn't hear anything and it didn't sound like a gunshot I just figured someone must of dropped a dumpster or heavy equipment was operating. Then I got into an elevator and saw the news.

That was a mobile ground crane, not a tower crane. They're not secured to anything. Looks like the hoist rope or the winding drum failed.
