There's a late 40's homeless man in my town. Apparently, he was a school teacher and was diagnosed with cancer. He lost his job and his wife left him and took the kids. With no health insurance, and a poor prognosis, the hospitals refused to treat him. Now he lives under the pier waiting to die. He spends his days on a bench staring off into the sea. He doesn't seem to have a drug problem but I do see him smoking a joint from time to time (it's California after all). I've tried talking to him but he won't talk about his past. It's a smaller community so his story has been vetted and it's something that is talked about at the local coffee shops.

I throw him $5 every time I see him. There isn't much you can do for people like this.
