It goes back a lot longer than the 80s and 90s if we are defining these men as "nice", hard working, and conforming to society. The biggest difference is that in past generations, this was enough to secure a good woman. Men still have in their subconscious that pleasing women through such a persona and behavior will lead to sex and pleasant relationships with women. Such a fallacy and misconception is in fact, the basis for our awareness "Red Pill".

The reason Al Bundy had such appeal was that every now and again, he would transcend his pathetic loser life and display Alpha behavior: picking up a hot girl at his shoe store, kicking ass at a strip club, and hitting the game winning home run in his softball league.

2008. The economic crash. It hit this area so hard that many have given up on themselves.

A man has to provide for himself as a masculine need. Once he begins relying on others (the government or a woman) he loses a large portion of his masculinity.

In my opinion

As much as we like to inculcate the view that "a man is an island" and can internalize the correct frame and successfully become the leader of his family, it's a pretty ahistorical view.

For instance, "Part of this journey is coming to grips with the fact that women cheat all of the time on every type of guy, and will most often get away with it." Do you think this was true prior to the "free love" breakdown of sexual mores? I don't.

Consider the differences in de-facto status between a man who is the economic bread-winner and a man who is basically in an economic "partnership." The latter seems to resemble a peer relationship, which requires strikingly different leadership tactics.

Finally, no fault divorce.

"When I think of a traditional "beta male" I just think of a normal guy who works hard and is well meaning but just doesn't have a dominant personality and isn't really aware of female nature or other red pill ideas. "

This. Usually, beta and alpha are comparisons of males. A man who wasn't the leader of his group of males or team could still be the leader of his home (female and children). This seems to be something the baby-boom and older generations take for granted. They got the benefit of their fore-bearers cultural capital regarding this issue, and mortgaged it to the next generation in exchange for the good-feelz.

The men waddle along like pussies, the women march as if they were toting a 10 lb steel nut sack by comparison.

However, I can honestly say that looking back at around 2005, I do not remember any of them in any social setting.

What year did the explosion occur? I honest can’t remember when the shift occurred.

What I have noticed is that it is not so much when did betas arrive, but when did it become socially unacceptable to be alpha in a way that was sexist.

There has always been a culture war between libs and conservatives, but in the last 25 years the libs have been much more aggressive in the media and the courtroom, making it much more difficult to actually live an alpha lifestyle. Ergo, more males have become beta as an adaptive measure to live a socially acceptable lifestyle.

And that is fucked up.

Until we start standing up for our rights in court (not just family court and divorice court) and fight collectivism in all forms, and fight for individual rights of all forms, we are going to continue to lose this battle, and more men will become beta as an adaptive measure to live a socially acceptable lifestyle.

And in the media? that is a bigger problem. There are so many worthless rags out there that pose as guides for men's lifestyle that spew out nothing but pure beta bullshit. Rolling Stone. ESPN. Anything Viacom or Disney. But fuck Rolling Stone and ESPN right in the ear. ESPN gets worse with every new programming cycle as more SWJ journalists get funneled into the lineup and more sports enthusiasts get pushed out.

I have thought about doing a podcast or a youtube channel that does nothing but exposes and attacks the political adgenda of ESPN. And the thought of dealing with the onslaught of legal troubles and SJWs scares the fuck out of me. How long would it be before I was neck deep in lawsuits and career roadblocks? But fuck it. We need more men like Roosh who just don't only live an alpha lifestyle, but make it a career mission to make it legally and socially acceptable to be alpha. Goddam, we would be so much happier and have so much less social turmoil if more men were alpha.

We aren't. Instead of using "beta males", let us call them feminized males. It is much more to the point and descriptive than calling them "beta males", not to mention more accurate.

Still seems like they are just the current iteration of what were yesteryear's average beta male updated to our current culture/economy.

The genesis of the modern beta began with the counter-culture movements of the 1960's.

These people bred...

...and out came this.
