Now when I have kids I will tell them to apply to whatever Indian or Thai or Mongol colleges they like and try to get a cultural, exchange rate, or other "deal" to get college free or nearly so. Strongly agree with scorpion's take on "for-profit" universities, although in my opinion I think most schools that don't have some sort of strong brand recognition (Ivy League, top public university) a huge network to draw off of (USC) or some sort of particularly strong program (e.g. San Jose State for comp sci) is in the same boat: they are selling a dream that you likely won't actualize given the things you are learning and the students/staff you are interacting with.

RE: Dodging Student Debt by Going Abroad
We often rationalize (I do it) when we just don't like certain things.

A woman can't just be a little pregnant, she is or is not.

A person can shirk his debts, a little or a lot, he is still shirking. Yes, he will say the government and schools are bad, fine I agree. But the agreement was made. I have my own set of shitty things I have gotten into, it isn't like I don't understand pain. Pain is part of the journey of life.

Don't get me wrong the education system is screwed. But beyond just the schools and government fucking themselves over, it is the individual who decides to go to school. Not just on taking on debt the cannot pay back or do not understand what they are getting into, but also the failure to truly know if they have the goods to be one that can leverage their education into something good.

I personally think students should really take a year off between high school and college. Work, etc.

Those that have the urge to go to college still can go if they can make it work (getting in, finances, etc.). Those that don't have the urge, well they saved themselves a shit load of pain.

RE: Dodging Student Debt by Going Abroad
Lets just blame the students.

No one forced them to take out the loans. People know damn well they won't make shit studying music/Spanish/history at Bumbfuck State and their parents make 75K combined.

It's like drugs, people seek drugs. El Chapo doesn't put a .45 to people's heads and forces them to snort some white dragon.

Tell CUNY or San Angelo State Uni to fuck off, you can do better going to a community college and then transfer to U of Houston or A&M.

There are good paying jobs out there, but people are too much of a pussy to work for it and don't want to work 50-60 hours a week. They want their cake and be able to eat it too (40 hours a week and 80K+ plus full benefits starting off). Yeah, people are that delusional.

RE: Dodging Student Debt by Going Abroad
The thing is that mostly middle class and upper class kids are the ones being hit by the debt burden, and some poor ones too.

If your parents make less than 40-45K , most colleges put you through for free as long as you do some work study or college immersion activities. Add in federal grants and you are good to go, tuition paid for and some extra bucks for natty light. Now most kids take out all the grants and some loans too because they think its free money for now. It's okay if you're going to invest it but most are stupid and spend it.

Shit, the Ivy League unis cover your tuition AND boarding if your parents make less than 70-110K depending on the college, if you make 90-150K you are only charged a certain percentage of the total income (10-25%).

Diversify your bonds, nigga.

Quote:Texas A&M University has expanded its commitment to low and middle income students through the Aggie Assurance program. The Aggie Assurance aids students with family income below $60,000 by pledging to provide enough scholarships and grants to pay tuition for all eligible* students. The Aggie Assurance encourages Texans to pursue higher education at a flagship, research institution.

Eligibility

You must be a Texas resident and eligible to pay resident tuition.
You must be an entering freshman or undergraduate transfer student beginning in the summer or fall 2008 semester or beyond. (current students who entered Texas A&M prior to the Summer 2008 semester are not eligible)
You must be a degree-seeking student (students who are seeking a second bachelor's degree or in a program in which they will receive a bachelor's and master's after completion of their program, and are classified as a master's student are not eligible for this program).
You (if you are an independent student) or your parent(s) (if you are a dependent student) must have an adjusted gross income of $60,000 or less.
You must be admitted and enrolled full-time at Texas A&M University-College Station.
You must have financial need as determined by the FAFSA or TASFA.
You must maintain a 2.5 GPA and meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements.
Your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA), must be complete and received by Texas A&M University by our March 15 priority date prior to the fall semester.

What does Aggie Assurance cover?

Aggie Assurance covers tuition – state mandated, designated tuition, and differential tuition. In essence, this is a commitment by the University that those below $60,000 in income will always have grants and scholarships to meet the tuition costs. At this time, the program does not include fees.

Quote:Cougar Promise
Guaranteed Free Tuition for Students with Family Income up to $45,000

The University of Houston will guarantee free tuition and mandatory fees to new in-state freshmen with family incomes at or below $45,000. The Cougar Promise is the University of Houston's promise to low-income families that college is accessible to their children and that financial aid will be available to them.

Eligibility is determined when a student has completed a FAFSA by March 15, 2015. Students who miss the deadline will be awarded the Cougar Promise based on the availability of funds. A separate application is not needed since Cougar Promise is distributed through various gift aid that the student is eligible to receive. Gift aid is aid that the student does not need to repay.

To be eligible for Cougar Promise, you must be:

A new entering freshman for Fall 2015
A Texas resident for tuition purposes
A high school graduate who has earned a recommended or distinguished diploma
A member of a family whose adjusted gross income does not exceed $45,000
Eligible to receive Federal Pell Grant and must submit all financial aid forms with supporting documents by March 15, 2015
Enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Houston, maintaining at least 30 credit hours within an academic year.

Maintaining a 2.5 is not that fucking hard.

Also, couldn't you pay your student loans with a credit card then declare bankruptcy?

No, all of my student loan processing sites would not let me pay by credit card. You could only ACH out of a checking account. My first credit card also had a pathetic cash advance limit (1k out of a 5k credit limit) so i couldn't just do cash advances and pay it off that way.

It wasn't until I paid off my student loans when my credit limit sky rocketed. I guess I could have bought gift cards and sell them for a small loss in ebay, but that's dicey.

You might try going to a bank and getting a personal loan to pay it off then declare bankruptcy.

Either way, it's very difficult to get a loan when you have a student loan hanging over head. The banks wised up to this trick. I don't know why people think this is still viable.

When I saw the words "Cougar Promise" in a Cattle Rustler post, I though he was going in a whole different direction. It would be nice if a college could promise you cougars, but I don't see that happening ever.

RE: Dodging Student Debt by Going Abroad
I never understood how one could just pick up and move to another country and pick up a job that's decent paying. Sure I've met people that have started a business and done well. However, they wouldn't be able to do freelance type of work that would require paypal (gov would seize). They would have to work in an under the table sort of environment (i.e. bar, waitstaff, construction). They will be living hand to mouth and given the fact that countries will start cracking down on foreigners working due to a job shortage of among their native populations, I don't see just moving to Berlin as a long term solution.

Unless of course you go gay for pay. I heard rentboy.com pays well.

There are some online services like Plastiq and Evolve that allow you to pay for items that you normally wouldn't be able to pay with credit card: mortgage, rent, tuition. There's a 2-3% fee, but if you're already sure that you're going to default, then that might be the way to go... just pay the bare minimums and then bounce when you feel like it.

College is overpriced and they are already have tons of endowment. True they should make student loans harder to get, ie for qualified candidates.

(01-20-2016 09:53 AM)The Beast1 Wrote:  As a New Zealand, Ireland, and Oz's visa programs, a cursory glance at them it looks to me that you can only extend the work visa one year after it expires for a max of two years total. What do you plan to do once those two years are up? You're going to have to get an employer to sponsor you or worse marry someone to stay bringing you back to square one.

Bit late replying as I was offline for a few days.

Those restrictions apply just the same to residents of the UK moving to Oz etc though, they're not only on Americans. But they don't stop other Anglosphere types from moving in large numbers.

What most other Anglosphere people do is use the youth visa to get 12/24 months in a country easily. When they arrive in a country they spend a few months fucking around as a barman or similar low level job that allows them to party a lot. Then, after a few months they get a professional white collar job. When their visa is running out after 12/24 months they'll have been in a job 6 months+ and generally the employer will be happy to pay the legal fees to help them apply for a long-term visa if they're a good worker.

To use one example I have figures for. In 2012, 25,827 Irish people received 12/24month youth visas for Australia. 10,134 Irish people received long-term visas (equiv of green cards) in Australia. 4,938 Irish people received Australian citizenship. The figures might seem low but bear in mind that's from Ireland's population of only 4.5million - you can multiply them by 70 to get what comparable per capita figures would be to the US. They show the kind of progression from youth>long term visa>citizenship route (presuming a roughly equal number of people applying for each each year, which isn't entirely accurate, but its a useful example).

The reason I'm labouring the point somewhat is that this kind of under 30 "working holiday" visa travel that leads to permanent emigration to a different 1st world country is completely common in the UK/Australia/Ireland/NZ etc. Yet is relatively unheard of in the U.S. for some reason. But the option is available to Americans, they just need to become aware of it.

I think if more American 20somethings realised they could emigrate to other English speaking, first world, countries relatively easily they might question the utility of paying off that $200,000 of student loan debt.

RE: Dodging Student Debt by Going Abroad
A heads up that if you are employed by the US Federal Government, after 10 years of working your loans will be forgiven. Gone.

Info: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/sites/defau...veness.pdf

You can take this further and do the Income Based Repayment plan / consolidate your loans + ...

Most government agencies will have a 'student loan repayment' program (between 3k-10/year usually)

If you use those payments to hit your IBR loan requirements, you can have your payments covered until the 10 year mark, at which point they vanish. You have to deal w gov't work for a while, but you will pay nothing (or next-to-nothing) on your loans.

The federal workforce is a ok solution. Salaries are very average, but there's a way around that too.

Look on USAjobs.gov for jobs that are military related and have over 25% travel. Anything over 25% you can usually ask the boss if you can travel more, and 99% of the time they are ok with it since most workers have families and don't want to travel.

I'm talking civilian jobs working along-side armed forces but on domestic soil. During these travel periods you will get a food per diem. Often times you can travel for months on end.

Your government per-diems for food are tax-free checks. No receipts required. These vary from $50-70/day. They direct deposit to your bank no questions asked.

Source: http://www.gsa.gov/portal/content/101518

Line up a 3 month trip and you have a couple grand a month tax free, for doing nothing but traveling and working an 8 hour day. That's ON TOP of your salary, and you won't be paying rent. Gov't will usually put you in a furnished 1-bedroom apartment for extended trips. A ho-hum job can be an above-average job if you seek out the gov't travel opportunities.

Summary:
get a low(-ish) salary gov't job that travels >25% of the time
Use IBR to get a low monthly payment based on low salary
Use government funded loan repayment program to pay min payments
Use travel per-diems to get tax-free cash that won't mess up your IBR
Travel on the gov't's dime, live minimal (don't have an apartment, live on the road as much as possible)
After 10 years loan is forgiven

Not perfect, it's a blueprint though
