The USA has no business being in the Persian Gulf anyway. Who apologized to whom is of far less concern.

I would absolutely Court Marshall the officers in charge for hazarding combat armed vessels and ordering their surrender - horrendous pictures and videos but to be expected from a Marxist Militant Feminist Administration doing everything in their power to turn our once proud Military into a socially engineered laughing stock.

The Officers in Charge of the Op should be Court Marshaled for putting these combat armed vessels and their crews in harms way without proper backup contingencies (A few F-18s Combat Air Patrol at the minimum). I would conduct a full Senate Armed Services committee review of this debacle as well.

You may have served, but what rank did you hold? Because I'd have expected an ex-serviceman (or veteran -- have you ever been under fire?) to have more sense than to hold a mangina feminist marxist President responsible for inviting the Iranians to capture his troops.

When a commanding officer surrenders, it's because he (invariably) phucked up his orders, or had been placed in a situation pretty damn worthless to resist, and his immediate responsibility is to his men and their safety.

Sure the orders given to him in turn were of pretty dubious delinquency, but he and his men as soldiers (or sailors) signed the dotted line to be put into harm's way for Uncle Sam on behalf of the incumbent Administration -- irrespective of their feelings towards it. To have accused the Oval Office of directly issuing those orders that led to their captivity is nothing short of neocon hamsterism. tardtard

I was scared shitless just waiting for Iran to try and mess with the sailors, but thankfully for both parties nothing happened. I honestly doubt the mental stability of whoever is jumping at the chance to start WW3 w/ Iran + allies over this. We violate a country's territorial waters and we have to apologize.

Thousands upon thousands of people violate our border and we also have to apologize...for calling them "illegal" and not throwing out enough red carpets.

This is what's become of the United States. We're unrecognizable from the nation we once were.

RE: US Sailors captured by Iran - Then Americans apologize for being wrong
I just wanted to know how these boats ended up in Iran's so called territory? At first I heard that the engine broke down on one of them. If that's the case, wouldn't the proper thing be to toss a line to the broken vessel and give a tow? Or is there some military protocol that prohibits that? Then I heard that the nav systems on both vessels malfunctioned. That just seems fishy to me that both would fail at the same time. Even so, should we assume the motherfuckers don't know how to use a compass? Shouldn't they have had fighter jets and other air support to cover these guys while waiting for assistance from other vessels? Who wants to bet that the final details of this fuck up will be classified for the next few decades to prevent further embarrassment?

This seems like a bit of a non- story to me. Two US patrol boats, one breaks down. They drift into Iranian waters. The Iranians rescue them, put them up for the night and in the mean time fix the engine.

Then the Iranians give the sailors their boats back and escort them back to friendly waters. Looks like a US navy fuck up of navigation and craft maintenance to me. Hence the apology.

Nothing to see here!

It became a story when the Iranians released humiliating video and pictures. A simple "rescue" wouldn't involve making the US sailors kneel and put their hands on their heads, fine-toothed comb inspection of the boat, and distributing the video and pictures worldwide. In the future, because of this embarrassment, there is an increased chance US Navy commanders will lean toward escalation in an ambiguous situation to try to regain face. Not saying it's right, but that's human nature.

Better than saying "sorry my boat broke down near your island" would have been to simply say "as soon as we fix this, we'll be on our way". The apology should be from the commander to his men (and token woman) at his courtmartial. Inexcusable breakdown in mission planning and preparedness - no redundant GPS or effective backup plan in case of equipment failure?

"Iranian waters" - this is a tiny island, 1000 feet across, with what looks like a single dock and a couple of buildings, 70 miles from the Iranian coast. Do they own the entire Persian Gulf then? Fuck the Iranian government.

HCE, I'm shaking my head at your last post how we shouldn't even be there. The reality is we'll project our power where and when we want for our national interests (yes, I'm talking about oil, so what), accept the consequences, and modify behavior as needed e.g. electing Trump in 298 days.

If the Island belongs to Iran then they own half the water between there and the next country.

Oh , and the search for weapons and makng the Americans visibly surrender was to ensure no trouble considering previous USE / Iran relations, and the fact that Obama supports Iran's enemies. The boat broke down, the sailors got lost but the Iranians sensibly took precautions just in case they had intercepted a failed special forces raid.

Iran showing the US they won't take shit.

I'm seeing multiple sources saying that Iran releasing photos/videos of the prisoners and putting the woman in a headscarf is a violation of the Geneva Convention.

On that note, in the event of war between Iran and the United States, should this absolve Iranian soldiers from the protection accorded by the Geneva Convention? Germany saw fit to similarly disregard the Geneva Convention in relation to Soviet POWs during WW2 -- should we then expect US troops to similarly starve, strip, maltreat and otherwise dehumanise Iranian prisoners and execute Revolutionary Guards in the manner of Hitler's Commissar Order?

US propaganda has been doing a good job of painting Iranians as evil and subhuman, I don't see this as being too hard to justify nor a reasonable scenario to bring up.

This is probably the most bizarre stretch of scapegoating I've come across, whatever one might think of Obama. Since when did a sitting POTUS determine the actions of his troops in captivity?

You'd think that US servicemen were under his executive orders to fight like pussies and behave as such in captivity in the eyes of the world.

Obama's international policies have lead many countries, our enemies included, to think we can be bullied. We've lost respect in the eyes of the world on many fronts.

One of his first things as president of the US was his 'apology tour' where he went around basically telling countries in different parts of the world, in person, that he understood how they could view America has a empire with ill ambitions and in a sense, apologizing for America.

Many of his foreign policy measures, tactics on restructuring the military and how he deals with states who are aggressive to us in general have been weak and seem to put America second, behind the country he is dealing with.

Obviously, the POTUS wasn't directing the action of these guys and I'm sure the sailors had no choice to surrender if they were outgunned.

What I'm saying is, in light of this overall reality that Obama, through many of his policies, tours and things he has said, has made us look weaker in the eyes of our advisaries for some time now, that this is just one more incident on top of it that adds to that perception. Obama thinks he's coming off as magnanimous and diplomatic. I'm not saying he should be a war monger, but there's no "big stick" behind his soft speaking and many of our would be advisaries sense and know this. They only understand strength and view his actions as supplication and weakness. The president has set the tone of acquiescence for years. Perception is reality.

And again, the Iranians are using it as a huge propaganda piece. I don't see how one can be an American and view those sailors on their own boat
all on their knees with their hands on their head and not feel some revulsion.

It's not their fault of course, it's just one more thing on the heap of the perception this administration's policies have created that we can be disrespected like this and increasingly are disrespected.

I'm all for jingoism and the single-minded pursuit of the national interest, damned the torpedoes and full speed ahead. But here is the thing: the United States is in the middle east, wasting blood and treasure that it doesn't have, not in pursuit of its national interest, but at the bidding of a foreign tribe that has its stick so far up our ass that it's embarrassing.

They are our worst enemy and pose a certifiably existential threat to our very survival, as they are waging a demographic jihad against us and corrupting our culture at every fucking turn. When you refer to what "America" is doing in the middle east just understand that you are taking pride not in the United States and its interests, but in the act of being treated as a cheap whore by an arrogant foreign pimp. There is nothing worthy about this and under such a reality I piss on "our" actions in this part of the world and hope for them to be stymied and thwarted at every turn, because that would be good for the world, good for America, and bad for the scum that is destroying us.

Seems a bit too convenient that this is becoming a flashpoint issue with Iran right when Saudi Arabia is mobilizing some kind of sunni super caliphate to wage jihad on its "enemies."

Before knee jerking about incidents like this just keep in mind who actually benefits from a war against Iran. hint: It's not the American people.

DeepDiver is right. Punishment for the commanders of this ill-fated mission. At a minimum they are supposed to cross-check their navigation references. What happened to doing sun lines, shooting stars? Only one GPS on two boats when every smartphone can pick it up?

Why have the track plotted so close to Farsi Island to begin with?

James Webb wrote a novel, "Something to Die For," in which a rogue admiral, "Mad Dog" Mulcahy, plots with Washington chickenhawks to set up a confrontation.

That said, it all ended OK. Nobody got killed and the sailors and boats were quickly returned. I wonder if they threw the crypto overboard before they were taken?

what propaganda are you talking about? The major media who all adoringly support Obama? I guess you're talking about right wing sources, fox, talk radio, etc.

I listen and read many sources from the internet to TV to the radio and come to my own conclusions.

By the way, I don't dispute we F'ed up big time in the middle east, especially under W's presidency and I was disappointed with him and a president. It appears we should have stayed out of Iraq and that whole quagmire.

That doesn't change the fact of what I said; Obama's foreign policy has been bad and it's lost the US alot of respect in many corners of the world, especially amongst our advesaries.

So let me get this straight.

Acting diplomatic = U.S. is weak, Obama is letting other countries walk all over us, etc.

Starting another Iraq/Afghan War in which millions of innocent people die for no good reason, we nearly bankrupt our economy, and every country in the world turns their back on us & we ACTUALLY loose "respect in the eyes of the world on many fronts" = amazing foreign policy? Will thrust the US into superpower-dom once more?
