Saudi Arabia Cuts Ties With Iran Amid Fallout From Cleric’s Execution
Looks like tension is getting pretty high in the Gulf. There were some signs of a posibble war since some time. What do you think?

Quote:BAGHDAD — Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties with Iran on Sunday and gave all Iranian diplomats 48 hours to leave the kingdom, as escalating tensions over the execution of an outspoken Shiite cleric in Saudi Arabia marked a new low in relations between the two Middle Eastern powers.

The surprise move, announced in a televised news conference by Adel al-Jubeir, the Saudi foreign minister, followed harsh criticism by Iranian leaders of the Saudis’ execution of Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr and the storming of the Saudi Embassy in Tehran by protesters in response.

They've been wanting a piece of each other for a long time. This could be excuse they needed. Have to say I'd root for Iran. Saudis are just evil and deserve to die.

I say now is a perfect time to buy oil stocks - If Iran blows the oil fields up, which they're perfectly capable of doing. Imagine that, no more Saudi oil Laugh

Sunni terrorism will dry up as quickly as their money reserves. The desert will reclaim that degenerate country and everybody else will be much happier.

How do you buy oil stocks? I'm just starting to learn about investing and am quite ignorant on the matter. Is this what's referred to as futures?

that'd be awesome on so many levels if Iran attacked Saudi oil fields.

Does Iran have the military capabilities to do that right now? I bet Russia would give them whatever weapons they wanted. Russia could solve a lot of its budget crisis by having Iran do the dirty work to drive up prices.

interesting situation as iraq served as a serious buffer between iran and the saudis while it was stable. now iran can advance unobstructed right to saudi arabia's door. no way iraqs shit armed forces will fight them, especially with ISIS screwing things up in the north.

Unfortunately, a saudi conflict will draw america in way more than any russian action.

looking for a new signature.

Well, buying oil company stocks works. I'm a total newb in regards to stocks and the like but there is a thread on it in the deep forum.

Iran wants better missiles and with Russia on their side I don't see why a convenient R&D programme cannot be started up. The Russians will not allow Nato to hit Iran.

So we could see a major conflict between the Saudis and Iran as a flash point between super powers.

So far we're in more with the Saudis than the Iranians, right?

But the Russians and Chinese are more with the Iranians than the Saudis, yes?

My guess is this will blow over, but it would be something if it managed to drag everyone in, like how WW1 did, with its system of alliances.

If the current conflict in Yemen showed us, the saudis, while having a high-tech army force, is a very inexperienced and amateur army. The iranians have way more training, but worse tech.

I recall the saudis trying to get nuclear tech some months ago, i am correct?

RE: Saudi Arabia Cuts Ties With Iran Amid Fallout From Cleric’s Execution
Saudi backed wahabi Islam has its tentacles on many of the so called radical Islamists. I am not 100% certain but seems like almost all of the terrorists happen to be Sunni NOT Shia Muslims. The us politicians and Israel call Iran the biggest exporter of terror etc. I remember John kasich said it during the last gop debate on CNN how Iran is a terror state. Not a single word on Saudi Arabia. Iran is involved in Syria, Lebanon and Palestine for the most part along with Yemen basically wherever a sizeable devout Shia population lives. Yet they are the terror state. It doesn't help that Iran continues to poke the big bear (USA) but Saudi Arabia is the culprit where terrorism has been originating. Saudi backed $$ preachers and mosques
preaching and brainwashing Sunni Muslims.

Let's see how the media paints Iran and Saudi Arabia. I trust you all have an idea.

The Saudis funded the Pakistani nuclear program back in the day - on the condition that they will be given access to some warheads whenever they request.

And they (Saudis) have the capabilities to use them - few years ago they bought some ballistic missiles from China.

I think this is mostly just tough talk on the part of the Iranians. The powers that be would not risk economic and political devastation over some cleric.

True.

The Saudis have some advanced tech, but their army is inexperienced and ineffective. In a ground war, my money is on the Iranians.

However, I don't think it will come to that. The Saudis may talk tough, but they wouldn't directly attack Iran. They prefer to use the proxy route to fight their battles since their army is so weak.

RE: Saudi Arabia Cuts Ties With Iran Amid Fallout From Cleric’s Execution
The execution of Nimr al-Nimr (a major Shi'ite cleric in Saudi Arabia), along with about 46 others, was a big deal. The Iranians are absolutely furious.

In the Saudi view, he was an agitator from a suspect religious minority who was openly challenging the authority of the monarchy in Riyadh. From the Iranian view, he was a brave campaigner for the rights of his people, who have been completely marginalized and repressed for many decades in Eastern Saudi Arabia.

Both countries have broken off diplomatic relations, but besides a war of words, there is not much likely to follow.

Why?

The Saudis know they are backed by the West to the hilt. Iran would never be so foolish as to undertake direct military action against them. They know it would invite an immediate US or NATO intervention.

But the proxy war in Syria is where we should be looking. The outcome of that conflict will be key for the region.

If the Iran--Syria alliance can hold, and keep Pres. Asad in power, then the Saudis will have failed. For all their money, their mercenaries, their lies, and their subversion, they will be seen to be ineffective.

So far, it looks like the balance of power on the ground in now favoring Asad, with the Russian intervention. It remains to be seen if any countermoves will be made against Russia or Putin, or if he will maintain his commitment.

2016 will be telling.

The Iraq Iran war was basically a proxy war between the Saudis and Iran.

Iraq was heavily financed by petro dollars and also U.S. equipment.

Although I think western powers were selling arms to both at the time and making a small fortune.

After I got out of the Marines I had an offer to teach English to the Royal Saudi Navy. I declined because I did not want to spend any more time in a desert and not be allowed to drink or chase skirts.

Fast forward a few years and I am talking to a guy in a bar. He tells me I should have taken it. Apparently the Royal Saudi Navy consisted of three ships docked in Jeddha.

Jeddha is a resort area for the Saudis. He told me that the basement of every western embassy had a bar in it. That if you went out into international waters you could drink. Apparently a lot of Saudi's do this. Many westerners living in their compounds brew their own beer, wine, etc.

Looking back it is probably my single biggest regret in my adult life.Confused

If Iran and Saudi went at it, without outside influence, Iran would crush them. The Saudi people are rich, lazy and fat while the average Iranian is just the opposite.

Iran has 2.3 million soldiers, while Saudi has 250,000. They have more tanks, artillery and ships. Saudi Arabia definitely has the technological advantage and air superiority, but that'll only get you so far if your citizens don't have the stomach for war.
