I strongly disagree. Have a Degree in finance from a top rated university with some MBA Courses and it was absolutely useless without connections. I even joined a Finance Proseffional Fraterniy and begged my professor (who initaited me into it) to help me with a job and all he got me was two contacts for internships that never got back to me. Not to say that if you have superb social skills, you can't get the high end jobs.

I eventually got a job as an auditor-job outsourced to India in 9 months.

Eventually, my mother helped me get a connection through one of her students, they gave me a huge analytical project to do which would have taken over a month to complete as part of my "candidate" process. Unfortunately, I fell down with the flu in the middle of it. Tried being an investment advisor for an insuarance company - still did not make enough to even move out my parents' basement. I later interviewed for a smilar position in investment banking in Russia, after a rigorous test-had to also do a month long project for free to analyze and energy company. I had to make rent.

Later got a job as a broker, despite being promoted - failed to meet the sales goals and was hungry until I went back to teaching English. I had a buddy with a similar background and he succeeded after spending 4 years getting his Level 3 CFA Certification. Do you have the time, money and/or patience for this?

Basically, it is all about selling people services they don't need (just like a broker/sell side investment banker) and qualifying them for loans they cannot pay back. Are you a good salesman?

Military is the better rout unless you find physics and engineering something that you naturally succeed at.
