I'm liking these monthly budget breakdowns, they give a much clearer picture of what we should expect to spend at our preferred level of lifestyle, adjusting up and down for comfort.

RE: Best countries to live comfortably on 1,500 USD or less per month?
Here is my run down of when I tried to live as cheap as possible in Chiang Mai for a month. I Kept track of all my expenses in a spreadsheet like Cyclone.

Rent: 6900
Gym: 1450
Electric: 4000
Food + All other expenses: 11000

Total: 23,350 baht or ~$650 usd

Rent was for a small studio apartment across from Kad Suan Kaew.. about 10 minute walk from Nimman. Included decent Wifi.

Gym was one of the nicer gyms in Chiang Mai IMO (Harris Fitness Center), was a little expensive but worth the price.

I spent a fortune on electric somehow. I don't think I ran the AC that much, but the numbers say differently. I kind of think it was an old unit and I was paying too much.

Food was mostly street food or eating in the food court at the mall for 20 - 50 baht a meal. Splurged a few times for restaurant meals.

I also spent very little at bars which was a big factor. If you are drinking moderately a few times per week these expenses are going to shoot way up. Easy to drop 1000+ baht in a night out, even in Chiang Mai.

Thai girls told me I was over paying for the apartment, and the AC bill was crazy so I probably could get these numbers down some if I tried.

Soo yes I lived on $650/month but all in all I wouldn't really recommend doing this. It was pretty boring living like this and you can get a lot more out of life with a few more dollars to spend. At this budget I didn't even have a motobike, which kept me pretty limited..walking everywhere and taking song thaews. Even doing shit like going bowling was too expensive at my $650/month level.

I think $1000/month would probably be much more reasonable. $1500 you can really kick things up a gear get a nicer apartment, booze more, etc. Spending is all relative though, but I think based on the lifestyle you described you could do reasonably well in Chiang Mai, but it is not exactly the paradise like the Digital Nomad crowd makes it out to be. The first time I went through as a backpacker I thought it was awesome, but actually living there was a different story. I could see myself retiring there, but at 25 there just wasn't enough going on to keep me content longer than a couple months.

^^ That sounds pretty close to my Dumaguete experience. Arguably the CM of the Philippines but with ocean.

PM me for accommodation options in Bangkok.

I don't think it is misleading. He is kind enough to share some information that he can back with numbers. He was clear on what you get for that lifestyle. He didn't just say his budget and let us imagine what kind of life he was living. And if you clicked on his datasheet in his signature line you would get more info, a clearer picture.

Not all people need massive upgrades. I know I don't, I need a bed, wifi, gym access and some other things but I don't need other things that people consider essential.

Some people just find life more enjoyable with simplicity and seems like he might be one of those guys, nothing wrong with that.

i was in the city of Thai Nguyen, college town of ~300,000, several college campuses, maybe 40 expats at a given time.

for the experience gained and passage into manhood. If you go the "1BR furnished rental" route, you are robbing yourself of the experience gained from going into survival mode. So what the fuck is the point? Human bodies are capable of living in caves and on dirt and shit. You don't owe it to yourself to test minimalism for 9 months? Especially when thousands of locals around you are doing the same?
and b), it provides a stepping stone for future financial success. I just moved to Honolulu, as expensive as NYC/SF, how do you think I'm spending only $800/month outside of rent ? I wouldn't have been able to do it without the financial skills mastered in Vietnam. Similarly, why did a 9/10 view me as a marriage prospect earlier this summer? It wouldn't have been without the numerous times of getting my guts wrenched out by other women and swallowing the red pill and lots of cold approach. It's the same shit

You could argue there are 2 red pills here, one for dating quality women and one for not spending your money like a retard. You have to put yourself through tough situations to land in success. See sig. This is self-development 101.

What do you mean by "relationship game"?

Why any Westerner would voluntarily want to live like this is beyond me. Upgrading your lifestyle is supposed to be one of the benefits of becoming a location independent man.

$2k is not a necessary amount. It's an amount that would be optimal for guys wanting to score higher class women, do trips abroad, eat in nicer restaurants now and then, keep their wardrobe optimal and so on. All the things we aspire to around here. It's hardly the high life. I can assure you.

Yes, these amounts are above what it takes to survive. But seriously man? Survival is the benchmark now?

It's misleading to quote people such low amounts as if that is the norm to live on for foreigners. Not everyone wants to move to a 3rd world country and live like a dirty hobo. We want to upgrade, not downgrade. That's why the "$500 a month in Chiang Mai" attention-seeking bloggers get such flak around here.

Sure, I could move to the Philippines, share a cockroach-ridden dorm with some students and spend below $200 a month eating dogfood. Is that the kind of self-improvement we are aiming for?

The fact that you're accusing me of eating <1000 calories worth of dogfood every day and "living like a dirty hobo" keeps me from taking your post seriously and hope no one else does either

Cyclone, chillax man. There's no need to get so defensive or go around calling us brats when we ask questions about new data, especially when it doesn't fall in line with what we've normally seen. Nobody is calling you a troll or anything like that.

Plus, if I really wanted a bare minimalist experience as you described, I can go camping or a long hiking expedition carrying a large bag on my back. It isn't the experience I'm after when I'm going to SEA. But it would definitely be in the cards at some point. Where? I don't know yet, but I'll figure it out later.

It'd be easier making bank and living well than struggling to get by comfortably on this setup.

But then again, I have no interest in going to western clubs and spending $100 in a night, no matter my income. I can't even remember the last time I did that. A great night out in Bangkok full of booze and women can cost $20 or less. Will there be any white people there? No.

Hey, knock yourself out spending $20 or less to eat street food, drink Chang, and bang some 6s. We've all done it. It can be a good time. But lets not act like you're really playing the game at a high level by doing that on a regular basis.

You could go to New York and have a great time eating 7-11 hot dogs and chasing drunk Staten Island girls at Joe's Corner Bar, but we all know NYC has bigger and better things to offer.

Edit: Almost forgot to give you your cool points for pretending to be a local and only going to places with no white people.

Very judgmental statement for you to make. You think because I failed to pay attention in Geography class in HS I will never move abroad?

He's not being judgemental he just knows that 99% of people who come on here and ask these questions never go anywhere.

How many threads are there with people asking where they should go live, hundreds probably. How many are followed up by the OP of such threads a year later saying 'I moved here, thanks for the input and here's a data sheet of my experiences'? Once or twice max.

People like the idea of planning to uproot their lives and go live in distant lands. They like to post threads about it and ask endless questions and get excited but then, they never go follow through on anything. If you've not done it yet OP let's face it you most likely never will.

99% of the guys who are living now in Colombia or Thailand or Ukraine etc. and writing about their experiences did not start off by asking 'where should I go' and mentally masturbating constantly asking strangers to plan their lives for them, they simply made a decision, packed a bag and went. I don't even answer these threads any-more unless its a repped member asking because I know it's a waste of my time and effort to share knowledge.

Prove me wrong though OP. Tells us where you are going and then do it, you have enough suggestions now. Move there and drop some intel and I'll be impressed that you are that rare breed of man. I won't hold my breath though.

There are so many flaws with what you stated, from faulty logic to asinine assumptions.

I'll go through a few things wrong with your post.

1st: "Anyone who posts asking for info is mentally masturbating and will never act on any info given". So many issues with this statement. For one, how long has this forum been around? Only 7 years. Of those 7 years, how many of them have had members who had relevant info about the particular country(ies) a poster wanted to visit? My point is, despite your assumptions, the kind of detailed info and planning one is able to make about moving abroad is relatively young and new. Samsamsam said anyone who moved abroad without visiting would be a fool. I would argue that anyone who visits a country without any information or research is an even bigger fool.

2nd: "If you haven't done it yet you probably never will." You know what I'd love to see a datasheet on? How many of this forums members, repped or not, have moved abroad prior to 25. Seriously, get me the info on that. I'll wait.

3rd. You say ask "endless questions". I believe I've asked less than a dozen, and much of this thread has been questions from people other than myself. Also, this is a FORUM, not a PM, if you hadn't noticed. Even if all of your above assumptions were 100% fact, it doesn't negate that there apparently isn't a thread about this particular topic yet, because if there were, I'm sure someone would have posted it by now and this thread would die. So even if were some jerk-off who still lived in his moms basement, it wouldn't change that OTHERS, repp'd and well-traveled members included, might find value in the responses. This is also the reason why I didn't include a lot of detail...you notice people asking me for more detail, like "What do you consider 'comfortable'?" I didn't include this info in the first place because this thread isn't about ME, it's a general question I think many people could benefit from.

4th. "I don't even answer these threads because it's a waste of my time." By all means, save your breath then. You've obviously judged me to be a lost cause, so don't bother responding. I may be young, but I'm old enough to know that I've got nothing to prove to anyone, least of all some anonymous forum member who thinks me beneath him.

Kuala Lumpur is also a good place for that budget, and most people speak English.

Nice diversity too (Malay, Chinese, Indian, White expats).

To everyone suggesting spending more money and thinking 1,500 USD isn't enough to move abroad:

I have no idea what your lifestyle consists of, but as I said earlier, I live in one of the 30 largest US cities by population, and I live on 1,500 a month. I don't live "like a hobo". My clothes are new, I have a 55 inch HD LED TV, iPod, electronics, etc. I don't have any CC debt, I live in a 1 BR apartment near my cities center, 3 blocks from bars and nightlife. My place is no pent-house, but it isn't a trailer either. I eat at home 6 days a week, because it's healthier. I work out from home using P90X3. It's more convenient than the gym and the results are the same. I don't go out drinking anymore, but that's mostly because in the US, I've noticed the cost-benefit is heavily skewed towards costs. I drive a 10 year old car, but it's paid for. It's no clunker, but it doesn't turn heads either.

Honestly, there's very little I would change if I suddenly doubled my income, other than traveling a lot more.

What are you guys spending money on that you feel 3k per month is necessary to live in a third world country???

I can't imagine spending that much money in a place cheaper than the US, when I live on half that IN the US!

What many posters here seem to miss is that there's so much more to it than only covering your basic necessities. Sure you can live your whole life on 1000 - 1500 USD a month for the rest of your life, but can you really learn, explore and develop all your hobbies and extracurricular interests on that budget.

I for one live somewhat minimalist in the 3rd world on 1-1,5k USD, which gives a decent lifestyle, and then intend to spend 1-2k a month on average on things I really enjoy doing. E.g. taking up a skydiving course and making a couple jumps every now and then, diving, renting a villa with your buddies over the weekend or doing a language course. Find what you love and spend your money doing that.

2k a month on hobbies?

WTF?

You do realize that's a LOT of cash to blow on "hobbies", right?

I (and I think 80% of people here fall in this category) am happy with good food, a nice place to call home, beautiful women, good transportation, and a few luxuries and conveniences.

If you have the cash flow of Walter White or Don Draper, thats great....but most of us don't, and don't need it. Even Roosh has stated that he really doesn't spend more than 2-3k per month on living expenses.

When I was a dirt poor teenager, I had better and more meaningful hobbies than I have now, particularly reading a lot of fiction, playing music, collecting stamps and other things, playing chess with friends, etc. Why I have become so much more primitive now that I have a lot more money is a separate issue, but my point is you definitely don't need a lot of money to have great hobbies, especially these days when you can find whatever you want online.

I agree....

And just to clarify, we (at least I) am discussing USD, United States DOLLAR, not Baht, or Rubbles, or whatever other currency thats far less valuable....maybe 2k BAHT or something for hobbies, but I can't imagine blowing 2k on trivial things every month. I'd like to know what you do for a living that you consider 4k per month a bare minimum standard of living in a 3rd world country. Are you hiring private security to follow you a around or what?

Anyways, the topic is BEST PLACES TO LIVE for ONE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED US DOLLARS OR LESS PER MONTH!

Please, don't ask or insinuate that more is necessary. I don't need to rent a Lambo when I visit the Ukraine, ok?

Just pointing out some inconsistency in your requests. It isn't about you in one post and then it is about your specifics. Threads move around, you can't really moderate them. It won't kill you if people talk about a slightly more luxurious lifestyle than what you had envisioned. It might help someone else. Just like when cyclone talked about a very frugal life, it didn't hurt anyone talking about that either. Also, some of your tone does seem a bit aggressive unnecessarily. This is the internet, it isn't like you have to respond immediately to when you see something. You can take a breathe and gather your thoughts. Sometimes, you don't need to swing at the pitch.

And if you are about helping others drop a datasheet on how you got to being location independent.

Thanks.

Quote where anyone said $3,000 is necessary to live in a "third world" country. I'd like to see that.

As I've said a hundred times on this forum, $1,000 per month is doable in BKK, but I'm past the point in my life where I want to live that lifestyle. $1,500 is decent, $2,000 would be a pretty good lifestyle, $3,000 would be about ideal and doubt I'd spend more than that.

Off topic, but you think P90X gives you the same results as lifting heavy weights? lol.

Dreambig was spot on with his post. You guys are leaving shit out like sushi buffet and drinks with friends, taking a girl to Hua Hin/Krabi/Samet/etc., taking a girl to dinner at an actual nice place, flying somewhere for your visa runs as opposed to sitting on a shit minivan (death trap) for 10 hours and enjoying a few days in a different country, buying tailored shirts, new boots/shoes, not living in a shithole and sleeping on the floor, fucking a decent looking woman who doesn't operate the noodle cart, etc.

Most of us here are not digital nomads spending 5 bucks a day. We work out, go on dates, buy nice clothes. I assume you occasionally want some of the finer things in life. What is doable and what is desirable are two different things.

But don't let that stop you. Personally I think you need to just pull the trigger sometimes and get out there.

2k - 3k is getting into baller territory in many parts of Asia and the FSU if you like Europe.

Maine and Canadian lobsters are the same animal. Prove me wrong.

Thanks.

There are 100+ threads about travel in general. This thread is about living abroad on a budget of 1,500 USD a month, specifically which countries you can live a comfortable life on that budget.

I don't think it helps anyone to change the subject, as I stated, there are PLENTY of threads about travelling in general, and being a baller while traveling, etc etc.

As for your suggestion on a datasheet for eBay, I just searched and to my surprise, it hasn't been done before. I'll work on it in the next few days.

"Necessary" is an overstatement, I'll admit. It was strongly suggested that 1.5k was basically poor-house, living with roaches in sqaular, type of lifestyle.

P90X gives me great results. Do I look like Arnold Schwarzenegger? Nope. But I don't want to. Also, I only spend 30 mins per day 6 days a week, and I do it from home. Just like I could make more money (by spending more TIME and EFFORT) if I wanted to, I choose not to. Putting more in would be a waste for me, it's past the point of diminishing returns. Unless you've done P90X for 90 days, I don't think you have any argument. Having friends that "did the program" doesn't count, because 95% of people can't/won't go full throttle on the program and/or stick with it, because it IS intense. Most guys go to the gym, lift some weights, rest for 3-5 mins, do another set, etc. P90X is straight one workout to the next, with 15-30 second breaks every 5 mins or so.

Anyways, back to topic....

The last part of your post was actually almost helpful. Visa runs, yes, this would be an expense I don't have in my life in the states, and something that would need to be accounted for. Now as for your statement that you need to blow cash to sleep with attractive girls, I'd like to hear some elaboration on that.

Plus, if I really wanted a bare minimalist experience as you described, I can go camping or a long hiking expedition carrying a large bag on my back.

Well, when someone presents their questions in an accusatory/sarcastic tone, it makes me shrug and wonder why they are even on this forum. And "living in the wild" is completely different from living minimally in a 2nd-tier city, in that the former is not transferable at all once you step back into real life cities.

The general gist of it is that girls in SEA or EE literally like you more when you buy them nice things / do nice things for them. This is something you'll experience when you get out of America - even here in Hawaii chicks would love nothing more than to fuck a hippie on his mattress on his floor smelling of weed and a Jimi Hendrix poster on his wall, just because it's "cool". But in SEA or EE the girls have a bit of class and, as men, we enjoy buying things for women and want them to like us for it which is kinda why we find it appealing.

Thank you. This is the kind of insight I was hoping for. Obviously, in the USA, you don't buy shit for women unless you're in an LTR. In other countries, women appreciate you buying them things. This is something I would need to work into my budget to have an optimal life with women.

These are the types of variables I was hoping others with experience would point out. Things like Visa runs, buying gifts for girls, etc.

What are the rough monthly costs of these non-stateside expenses? What does it run (on average) to do a Visa run? If it's only bi-annually, what does the monthly expense break down to? Etc.
