In India, public defecation is a serious problem. This public service announcement attempts to combat the issue with a silly song and surreal, animated music video.

It might not be for everyone, but to its credit, the musical PSA, entitled "Poo Party," manages to make an unsavory topic both memorable and entertaining. And that's to say nothing of how catchy its refrain is: "Take the poo to the loo."





According to UNICEF, the international relief organization behind the "Poo2Loo" campaign, an estimated 620 million Indians poop out in the open every day, dumping more than 143 million pounds of solid human waste and putting the public at risk for "life-threatening infections, diseases and epidemics."

It's pointless to try to educate, they're Indians. As long as they have that shit piss and rotting corpses filled river in which they bathe and drink from, they'll never listen to the advances of civilization. A very funny and curious people they are, but I'm ok with them as long as they remain in India. Or prepare to hear this:

Nope - Indians have actually quite intellectually minded people, but a lot of the mentalities created by the caste system and backwards thinking will rather take centuries to abolish completely. (I personally give it 1-2 centuries.)

The government is obviously doing what it can with campaigns like that to educate them. But the truth of the matter is that they would have to raise their living standards, give them all a higher education, wipe clean some of the destructive religious thinking patterns. Many of course living in the West are already there, but it will take a long time to reach the entire country.

You don't need higher education to know about and appreciate hygiene. Hell, you don't need ANY education. The most hillbilliest and hickiest backwards peasants in the middle ages in some remote Sibirian village already build outhouse toilets because they instinctively understood that having close proximity to feces or shitting around where you live is unsanity and leads to disease. Hell many cultures had traditions and practices revolving around cleanliness and cleanliness was equated to sanctity like the Muslims etc. Meanwhile, in modern day India, Indians - not even just the countryside peasants - shit around on railtracks or around them, regard a sanity Western toilet in their house as more unclean than shitting out in the street and even BATHE in the fetid corpse-feces-water of the river Ganghes! Cow dung is some kind of holy shit (literally). Hell the practice of wiping up after yourself with your left hand and just rinsing your hand in a bucket of shit-water is still the norm. Whenever I think of India, I think of this:

I've got a really good friend from India. He was raised there and visits every once in a while, he strongly advised against visiting unless it's with someone who has already gone due to examples like the ones on this post and hundreds more of disgusting things

I've been to India (Mumbai and Vadodara) myself. Spent several days there in 2014. Granted, I didn't see too much of the countryside. But, seeing the main parts of these two cities, I'm fairly sure the target audience of the OP's video is the countryside. They are usually uneducated and poor, relatively speaking.

Like most things, you have to experience it for yourself to really understand it. Heck, there's a reason this forum tends to be skeptical of local guys' opinions of their own women, for instance. Ask a Ukrainian guy who's never left Ukraine about Ukrainian versus Western girls. While he may have heard or seen on TV or the Internet that Western girls can't compete, he's never actually experienced the relative torture of dealing with one. Not that I'm saying he should, I'm just saying he doesn't have the experience.

It will take much longer for India to break out of superstition customs such as this. Modern health will bail them out of full blown health crisis. Let us not forget that the British for example were tossing their shit onto the streets not all that long ago (~150 years ago) and did not cycle around and move horse shit either from the streets. It took full blown infectious epidemics of to make a change to more hygienic practices.

The same type of crisis would force India to modernize quickly but modest modern health will keep issue form getting out of hand. It will take generations to break old customs, the cities will have to lead the charge in then introducing countryside migrants to modern toilet systems.

Not sure how else you speed things up unless you dump more money into education programs or you do brazen things like do a 'shit tax' and tax people if they shit in the streets versus their homes.

This was a mere 250 years ago.

India will change, maybe not until 2030, but certainly some day. I would bet a dump of Versailles on it.

India is overpopulated and tropical. It's difficult to industrialize tropical regions.
It's even more difficult to deal with waste.

The biggest challenge of the 21st century won't be the Europe migration or any demographic shifts, it will be the industrialization of the Indian subcontinent and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Between these two regions, that'll be 3 billion people who will drive cars, consume a tenth fold energy than they do now, eat more meat and proteins, and just as importantly, they'll produce far more waste than today.

Cleaning up the cities and not shitting in public is step one, but there's still far more work to be done. The economic development of India is not a zero sum game, the whole world will benefit from an industrialized India (And SS-Africa).

Actually it's more lack of awareness, customs, lack of education, low IQ - in essence backwardness.

I have seen a documentary on it and they even had IT students in the city who described how they missed shitting in the field, as it was a social event and they considered it cleaner than a toilet. Also many have local toilets, but more in the form of a latrine, essentially a hole in the earth, but not a WC.

Backwards thinking sometimes needs to be enforced. When the first primary education came in Europe the ruling aristocracy had to send the military and police to collect the kids. The peasants and poor did not want to send them to school.

Many of the unsanitary Indian customs can be explained by backwards customs and are not even alleviated with education. One IT student said that even in big cities - whenever he can, he enjoys taking a dump outside. They should start fining everyone and be done with it. Anyone can dig a hole in the earth.

It's illegal to shit in the open in all civilized countries. You get a fine for it. So they should do the same in India. But I guess due to the sheer number of people doing it, a shit-free-everywhere party might emerge.
