I wonder if people even stop and think about this kind of thing. Probably not, but still... Seems like you can get people to do really stupid things to "help the children" or "raise awareness of breast cancer" (my standard response to that one is "I'm aware of it. Now leave me alone").

I don't see any evidence that it ever crosses their minds that pissing their pants, changing their FaceBook avatar, or liking and sharing a post will do anything for any cause they mindlessly believe in.

Virtue Signalling is the lowest-risk, lowest-effort way to gain status in the world of social media. And if there are two things millennials can't stand, it's risk and effort.

Really, most people's behaviour on social media platforms comes down to either:

a) trying to convince everyone they're leading interesting lives (they're not), and

b) trying to convince everyone they're good, brave people (again, they're not)

If you provide a low-risk, low-effort fad to achieve either of these goals, millennials (well, overwhelmingly girls, but I don't want to let guys off the hook on this one either) will jump on the bandwagon without giving the ridiculousness of what they're doing even a moment's thought.

So the answer is: there is no limit to how far you troll them, as long as they think enough other people are joining in for it to be "safe". It's also why no mainstream feminist campaigns come from the "grass roots" - if they all need pre-approval, who makes the first move to get the ball rolling? The whole thing is orchestrated long before it happens, and media personalities are usually chosen to make it "trendy".
