I just came across this, who in their right minds would try to take away an outlet that not only lets guys release their stress, but also teaches them how to maintain control over their own anger etc etc.

Some definitions of 'Wowser' for the non-Australians, which has been in common use since 1900 or so:

So kids... don't punch at each other with gloves, mmkay.
Yet charging your whole body into someone else in a rugby / football tackle? No problem.
Also, we seem to be strangely silent on ice hockey & head trauma in general.
So yeah... we're a consistent bunch...

Ehhhh, the AMA's had this position for years and years, and nobody's stopped boxing or any other combat sport. And it's amusing to browse through their position statements on other matters: in favour of physical activity, but they avoid actual mention of the word "sport" and they say not a word about concussion, long-term physical injuries from playing professional sport, back injury or anything else which would seem rather relevant in this football-mad country of ours. I would guess there's a much higher rate of permanent or long-term injury, or indeed drug addiction at large, out of football in Australia than there is in boxing or MMA.

On the other hand, they're also pretty nationalist when it comes to overseas trained doctors.

This is ridiculous. Just the next step in society's attempt to neuter all men?

Martial arts/combat sports made me more fit, stronger, and healthier in almost every way imaginable. Benefits include increased bone density, flexibility, larger lung capacity, and increased concentration. The risk of injury is always present, though I have rarely experienced it or seen it, even after watching hundreds of sparring matches (we didn't use protective pads or soft mats in our dojo, either).

On the other hand, IMO if a man's body hasn't undergone the stress of training, especially for combat, it is weak and may be more prone to injury. For example, during combat training you are taught how to fall properly. You fall hundreds/thousands of times until it becomes second nature. The average idiot trips and falls on his hands and breaks a finger or their wrist. One person in our dojo fell from a second story balcony, and escaped uninjured.

If someone wants to do combat sports, that's their decision. Every man should have the right to experience combat.

This is probably more of a legal ploy to protect doctors in general than an actual attempt to ban combat sport.

Basically, it removes from Aussie doctors the need to declare someone 'fit' for combat sport, in effect protecting doctors from lawsuits.

Since a doctor cannot declare Johnny fit for boxing (because boxing is officially not recommended to begin with), if Johnny gets Boxer's dementia or a brain bleed from boxing, he can't turn around and tell his doctor, "But you said I'll be fine! I'm gonna sue you!"

In effect, wherever litigation against doctors is prominent, the official statements and guidelines will tend to recommend whatever is least likely to result in a lawsuit against doctors, rather than what is in the interests of the patient.
