I would have visited Iran, but I was afraid that when I was there, Israel would bomb the country. Now, it's extremely unlikely that Netanyahu would try any shit like that after the US -- and the Western nations -- reached a nuke agreement with Iran.

BTW, Black guys should get on the fastest thing smokin' and travel to Iran.

Chaos and LouEvilSlugger; how was your experience getting a visa, and what company did you use?
I understand it's possible to get a VOA with a letter of invitation, but the chance of getting denied entry is a little risk.
Did you travel as a part off a group or rolled solo? I heard americans can only visit if they are a part of a group.
I prefeer to have a guide/group for some days for the easiness of getting to the historical sites like Isfahan, Shiraz and Persepolis.

I will try getting there next year.

Travelled independently with my girlfriend and her mother, both Iranian citizens. I used Touran Zamin and highly recommend them: quick, easy and inexpensive (just have your shit in order).

As of Feb 2014, American, Canadian and British passport holders need to sign up for tours to get a tourist visa for Iran. If you hold a EU passport like me, you can travel as you please. Iran is ridiculously safe.

My Associate's degree was in Persian Farsi studies and I must say that this deal has been most intriguing. I made the decision back in 2008 to study Farsi and Iranian culture based on the fact that we all but inevitably headed to a head on confrontation, only for this to happen. Which is still even better news. I really think it is an interesting country and culture as a whole. I can brush up my Farsi and expect maybe some good opportunities. To be honest, I look more forward to the business opportunities more than the traveling. Not only would I stick out as a Black American, but I was also in the military. That may complicate things... but one day I do hope to visit with the right circumstances.

I rolled alone.

As a Finnish passport holder it was very easy getting a visa.
Just filled in the visa application and went to the Iranian Embassy in Helsinki.

40€ and three days later I picked it up.

I came to Iran by land across the Iraqi border so I had to get the visa in advance, otherwise I might have taken it on arrival.

I wouldn't be booking any trips yet. They still hold foreign citizens in jail on bogus charges. When the mullahs are removed then I would consider going. However, just to travel and not write any political based blogs and to just see the country,,, my Persian friends told me that it is totally safe. Persian hospitality is second to none.
On YouTube you can probably find the lonely planet episode or a no reservations episode by Bourdain on Iran.

Correct. I will try to go by VOA.
Don't want the hassle with spending time and money by going to Oslo.

When I was in Dallas, Texas, I stayed in an apartment owned by an Iranian woman. She said the "Death to America" rallies are created by the government and not random people. Also, women do have to wear a head scarf but some women are quietly rebelling against it. And she said it's not hard for Americans to go Iran, but because of sanctions, cash is crucial (bank sanctions prevent credit card usage). I'm Iranian raised in the U.S., I can tell you that the best part of tourism will remain the part before sanctions are lifted -- because it's still kind of a taboo country to go to (although less and less so now) so you'll have special status as a foreigner.

Going to bump this thread. Just booked a ticket for two weeks in December. Plan on doing some cultural stuff with Persepolis being something I've wanted to see for years, and visit Yazd, Esfahan, Shiraz and Tehran. I was thinking on trying to arrange some contacts via couchsurfing. Used this a few times in the past. Maybe that will be a good way to get invited to some parties and such.

Any tips or general advice?
