Looks like Reddit management didn't learn anything from the ordeal. I figured this would happen actually since they had a corporate culture shift took place.

There’s something I neglected to tell you all this time (“executive privilege”), but I’m declassifying a lot of things these days. I’ve always remembered that email when I read the occasional posting here where people say “the founders of reddit intended this to be a place for free speech.” Human minds love originalism, e.g. “we’re in trouble, so surely if we go back to the original intentions, we can make things good again.” Sorry to tell you guys but NO, that wasn’t their intention at all ever. Sucks to be you, /r/coontown[4] - I hope you enjoy voat!

The free speech policy was something I formalized because it seemed like the wiser course at the time. It’s worth stating that in that era, we were talking about whether it was ok for people to post creepy pictures of women taken legally in public. That’s shitty, but it’s a far cry from the extremes of hate that some parts of the site host today. It seemed that allowing creepers to post (anonymized) pictures of women taken in public, in a relatively small subreddit that never showed up on the front page, was a small price to pay for making it clear that we were a place welcoming of all opinions and discourse.

Having made that decision - much of reddit’s current condition is on me. I didn’t anticipate what (some) redditors would decide to do with freedom. reddit has become a lot bigger - yes, a lot better - AND a lot worse. I have to take responsibility.

But... the most delicious part of this is that on at least two separate occasions, the board pressed /u/ekjp[5] to outright ban ALL the hate subreddits in a sweeping purge. She resisted, knowing the community, claiming it would be a shitshow. Ellen isn’t some “evil, manipulative, out-of-touch incompetent she-devil” as was often depicted. She was approved by the board and recommended by me because when I left, she was the only technology executive anywhere who had the chops and experience to manage a startup of this size, AND who understood what reddit was all about. As we can see from her post-resignation activity[6] , she knows perfectly well how to fit in with the reddit community and is a normal, funny person - just like in real life - she simply didn’t sit on reddit all day because she was busy with her day job.

Ellen was more or less inclined to continue upholding my free-speech policies. /r/fatpeoplehate[7] was banned for inciting off-site harassment, not discussing fat-shaming. What all the white-power racist-sexist neckbeards don’t understand is that with her at the head of the company, the company would be immune to accusations of promoting sexism and racism: she is literally Silicon Valley’s #1 Feminist Hero, so any “SJWs” would have a hard time attacking the company for intentionally creating a bastion (heh) of sexist/racist content. She probably would have tolerated your existence so long as you didn’t cause any problems - I know that her long-term strategies were to find ways to surface and publicize reddit’s good parts - allowing the bad parts to exist but keeping them out of the spotlight. It would have been very principled - the CEO of reddit, who once sued her previous employer for sexual discrimination, upholds free speech and tolerates the ugly side of humanity because it is so important to maintaining a platform for open discourse. It would have been unassailable.

Well, now she’s gone (you did it reddit!), and /u/spez[8] has the moral authority as a co-founder to move ahead with the purge. We tried to let you govern yourselves and you failed, so now The Man is going to set some Rules. Admittedly, I can’t say I’m terribly upset.

I guess it would be easier to trash this and say it's nonsense or something. I do believe that human beings are pretty complex creatures, and I can't imagine that Ellen Pao did anything positive to endear herself to the public that ate her alive. Is this a case of those who are against SJW's using the SJW's tactics against their own?

Regardless, if this is true, Ellen Pao definitely becomes a very interesting person to me. Extremely intelligent if you ask me, to be able to think like this. That post really should not be surprising. And there aren't any details you couldn't decide on your own. What I have heard is that fat people hate was banned for pissing off imgur, who is cozy with Reddit. Nothing new on that front. Nor should it really surprise anyone that Ellen Pao is not some kind of tyrant, but that the sjw infection at Reddit goes much deeper. Nevertheless, the fph situation as well as the firing one were both handled quite poorly, and that is still on her.

Well that certainly makes things a lot more interesting. Yishan Wong is one authority on the subject matter I'd believe. So apparently Pao was the "moderate" and the board is pushing for full SJWism on reddit.

In that case, bring it on. The sooner that reddit converts to a full-blown "safe space" the better. The beta cucks in Silicon Valley are complicit in destroying freedom online and in real life, it would be nice for them to stand behind their actions for once instead of doing it in the shadows.

First of all I have no doubt that the Reddit founders did not really believe in absolute free speech. Total free speech cannot exist, otherwise you would have Nazi pedo-porn threads also on a forum like here within a week. But it depends what the guidelines of the forum are and Reddit if it wants to grow should have an even broader scope than for example RVF, since it wants to appeal to everybody.

+ her former employer claimed that she was incompetent and her behavior - even her posting behavior on Reddit showed that she did not have much of a technical knowledge at all

All those things combined make it appear to me as if the SJW board wanted to purge Reddit of everything that upsets the mainstream. Soon The RedPill will go as well or be completely taken over by the Blue Pill Borg there.

We did not understand how people could use it to harm others.

The foundations of the Internet were laid on free expression, but the founders just did not understand how effective their creation would be for the coordination and amplification of harassing behavior. Or that the users who were the biggest bullies would be rewarded with attention for their behavior. Or that young people would come to see this bullying as the norm — as something to emulate in an effort to one-up each other. As the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which was founded to help protect Internet civil liberties, concluded this year: “The sad irony is that online harassers misuse the fundamental strength of the Internet as a powerful communication medium to magnify and co-ordinate their actions and effectively silence and intimidate others.”

Reddit is the Internet, and it exhibits all the good, the bad and the ugly of the Internet. It has been fighting this harassment in the trenches. In February, we committed to removing revenge porn from our site, and others followed our lead. In May, the company banned harassment of individuals from the site. Last month, we took down sections of the site that drew repeat harassers. Then, after making these policy changes to prevent and ban harassment, I, along with several colleagues, was targeted with harassing messages, attempts to post my private information online and death threats. These were attempts to demean, shame and scare us into silence.

Undeterred, we took steps to prevent bad behavior in an incremental and thoughtful fashion. We doubled the size of our community-management team. We brought in two experienced managers to improve our operations, training and overall leadership. We added to our engineering team. We hired a product manager to help develop tools to help our volunteer moderators.

This isn’t an easy problem to solve. To understand the challenges facing today’s Internet content platforms, layer onto that original balancing act a desire to grow audience and generate revenue. A large portion of the Internet audience enjoys edgy content and the behavior of the more extreme users; it wants to see the bad with the good, so it becomes harder to get rid of the ugly. But to attract more mainstream audiences and bring in the big-budget advertisers, you must hide or remove the ugly.

Expecting Internet platforms to eliminate hate and harassment is likely to disappoint. As the number of users climbs, community management becomes ever more difficult. If mistakes are made 0.01 percent of the time, that could mean tens of thousands of mistakes. And for a community looking for clear, evenly applied rules, mistakes are frustrating. They lead to a lack of trust. Turning to automation to enforce standards leads to a lack of human contact and understanding. No one has figured out the best place to draw the line between bad and ugly — or whether that line can support a viable business model.

So it’s left to all of us to figure it out, to call out abuse when we see it. As the trolls on Reddit grew louder and more harassing in recent weeks, another group of users became more vocal. First a few sent positive messages. Then a few more. Soon, I was receiving hundreds of messages a day, and at one point thousands. These messages were thoughtful, well-written and heartfelt, in stark contrast to the trolling messages, which were usually made up of little more than four-letter words. Many shared their own stories of harassment and thanked us for our stance.

The writers of these messages often said they could not imagine the hate I was experiencing. Most apologized for the trolls’ behavior. And some apologized for standing on the sidelines. “I didn’t do anything, and that is why I am sorry,” one user wrote. “I stayed indifferent. I didn’t attack nor defend. I am sorry for my inaction. You are a human. And no one needs to be treated like you were.” Some apologized for their own trollish behavior and promised they had reformed.

As the threats became really violent, people ended their messages with “stay safe.” Eventually, users started responding on Reddit itself, using accurate information and supportive messages to fight back against the trolls.

In the battle for the Internet, the power of humanity to overcome hate gives me hope. I’m rooting for the humans over the trolls. I know we can win.

I guess it would be easier to trash this and say it's nonsense or something. I do believe that human beings are pretty complex creatures, and I can't imagine that Ellen Pao did anything positive to endear herself to the public that ate her alive. Is this a case of those who are against SJW's using the SJW's tactics against their own?

Regardless, if this is true, Ellen Pao definitely becomes a very interesting person to me. Extremely intelligent if you ask me, to be able to think like this. That was likely the plan, but they didn't realize how horrific, dangerous and toxic these people are. Call it "blowback" damage, they believed their own propaganda about how these people were really the victims and just helping educate people, and that they really were a plus and not a minus. She genuinely was a hard shield. The shield was so hard it was made of depleted uranium, highly radioactive, dipped in cyanide, and firmly strapped to their arm. And they're fighting a naval engagement on a pitching deck trying to jump onto another ship. Time to ditch that shield before it drags you down and drowns you or poisons you. And hope the cancer it caused doesn't spread.
