I did an extensive search for this and am pretty shocked it hasn't been brought up already, although there are threads on working elsewhere, I am looking for information on starting a business. I have taken classes and studied extensively in international business, and although I've learned much, I am familiar with very few of the intricacies of starting a boots on ground business outside of my home country (I am from Canada). Please note that I am only speaking about a brick and mortar operation, don't say "start an online business" because that's not what I'm looking for (even though I am aware of the pretty much non-existent barriers to entry). I have two partners and myself that are interested in starting up shop in Australia, and then expanding into potentially SEA, Europe, maybe North Africa, and the USA (not necessarily in that order).

I wouldn't be surprised that quite a few of you have looked into starting a business elsewhere due to the benefits of economies, opportunities, or simply because you wanted to live elsewhere.

My question to you guys involves everything with starting a business, obtaining the correct visas, foreign investment limitations, legality of the processes, tax deferrals or issues with taxation (get an accountant always), and all the other red tape of the situation. I am looking for a discussion on all these issues and more, and if you have concrete information about any of those places, that would be even more helpful.

This is extremely broad and hard to answer.

I've managed small brick and mortar business in Thailand and there is tons of rules and regulations and there's lots of changes depending on the industry you are in, as well as which country you are from.

I think you're much better off getting this information on forums dedicated to each specific country. Go to Thaivisa.com and post your questions regarding Thailand there and you'll get much more info.

I'm looking for all issues with going into another country, then will take those issues and research them with regards to each country/province and potentially down to the city I plan to get into. So with regards to issues I have:

-Visas (both personal and business related)
-Applications (with regards to entry)
-limitations on foreign investment and informing the government (anything less than 231 million in Aus is fair game)
-Legal issues regarding the industry
-Taxation treaties or double taxation

I know I'm missing a ton, so if you can give me examples of some of the regulations and issues you ran into, I'm just looking for a discussion on all things international business.

I had plans to start a business in a 3rd world country that I so very much love. However the more research I did the harder and harder (and less profitable) it all became. My main problems

1. Trust
2. Shady Permits and regulations
3. Not enough money to be made (at least for the idea I had)

What happened was I started a business instead in my home country (Canada) and instead of starting up in Montreal where im from. I opened up shop in Edmonton. Just a small move between cities made things much more difficult for me which of course I underestimated and overlooked many things. Im glad I started with a smallish business with low-medium risk as I really went into this with confidence and overlooked and underplayed many aspects. Im taking it as a learning process

things to keep in mind. If your a hot shot in your city just remember if you move your contacts, knowledge of the city are all gone.

Hopefully in a few years I can finally make the move and open up shop in a city I want to live, running a business I actually want to be in.

on the plus side however I can now take advantage of my country foreign worker program and plan on importing my fine workers (up to 9) at 1900 CAD a pop.

I've often thought about this. I wish there was someway you could ask the state: "I am about to start a business. Under what circumstances will you attack me?", and get a clear comprehensive list.

It'll depend mostly on the country. Better to ask in country specific forums.

No one who knows his shit is going to give this info for free, if you know how to do this in a emerging country that companies want to invest in you would make a fortune selling your services.

It varies country to country, id say narrow it down and focus on those locations. Also get a lawyer and accountant that can point you in the correct direction, I've started a business in an EU country though we will focus on US customers. There were a lot of rules and regulation that we just don't have in the states. So much so it's taken quite a few months (ten to be exact) to get all the paperwork finalized.....
