Yeah, bears scare the shit out of me, especially grizzly bears. I don't think there is a more terrifying predator out there. Big cats tend to stalk and ambush their prey, so you're relatively safe so long as you hunker down for the night under some shelter. If they do get you, they kill you relatively peacefully by going for the neck and holding on till you exsanguinate.

A grizzly? Those motherfuckers will smell you out in your tent and barge in if they feel like it. They're 10ft tall, 1000lb+ primeval monsters that kill you by tearing your flesh limb from limb. They say if a black bear shows agression you stand your ground, and if it attacks you try to fight it off. For grizzlies, the best practice is for you to play dead, because there is shit all you can do if a grizzly decides your time is up. There is a built in fear that humans have of unknown terrors that go bump in the night, and we have created various mythical creatures like werewolves, ogres, and the like, but a grizzly bear is not any less terrifying than what we imagine these fantastic monsters to be.

I love this show. It shows just how ridiculous the desire for societal collapse is.

The competitors are people with experience and training, and limited but useful equipment. They are put into this isolated situation, and at least 1 of them would have been dead by the end of the first week without the support crew.

Prepping can only take you so far, there's a lot of luck required in order to cope with a genuine survival state. Food, water, not ending up next to predators...

Everyone left is now at the stage where they have fresh water, a reliable food source, shelter and fire. From now on it will be dealing with isolation and not getting themselves into a foolish situation. Guys who keep themselves busy and set ambitious goals like Lucas seem to be doing the best. I think that's the trick - aim to make a boat or some other task to keep your mind busy and focused.

I tried watching episode 1 a while back but couldn't get into it. Granted I was distracted. On episode 3 now, while cleaning. Better the second time around.

Really enjoyed the last episode with its focus on Alan. The part with him talking to himself was hilarious, hope we get to see some more of his efforts to stay entertained.
Unfortunately we didn´t see much of Sam or how he caught that big fish.
Mitch is also doing fine, fought the mold and won.
Lucas having problems with moving his boat around due to the strong currents. I think using it on a regular basis might cost him more calories than it gains, and also could be rather dangerous.
Everyone seems to be in good shape now, food and water supply is more or less secured and a shelter with fire built (although I think Mitch should probably try to build something more solid).
Now it´s all about the psychological part. Who can cope best with the isolation and boredom, who has an unlucky encounter with a predator, etc.
Will be interesting to see which of the guys is going to win this.

As far as the Camera and Batteries go, apparently what they do is they have a weekly check up where they do medical evaluations to make sure the contestants are physically and mentally sound. It is during this time that they give new batteries, collect the media storage, and probably replace any equipment like cameras or add equipment like the life vests or any medical kit stuff that got used or check to make sure the sat phones work or whatever. I don't think their insurers or lawyers would allow them to do this without those precautions in place.

In fact, I bet they have a team just a few miles away, at most, to check on them and respond in case of an emergency animal attack or something.

Edit: I bet they also have a separate camera crew or a few on the island with a don't contact unless emergency order or something similar. There is a lot of footage that obviously wasn't taken by the contestants. Hell, I would be surprised if they have to briefly make contact once a day or especially during storms. A slip and fall could render someone unconscious and they wouldn't be able to call for help on the sat phone, so knowing that they missed their scheduled check in window would mean rescue teams move in on a gps device and the show would still get the individually recorded footage of the accident and rescue to be used.


It's a pretty good show. I had saw it advertised but didn't think much of it but you guys discussing it convinced me to watch a few episodes and I gotta admit that I am hooked.

I think Alan may have it in the bag. Being older, he's got life experience on his side and while he is clearly in touch with his emotions, he seems to enjoy having the opportunity to be alone, even when it is tough on a social level.

He's doing very well food-wise, it would seem and his survival craft seems strong.

Or maybe he gets more coverage in later episodes and they are focusing the attention on guys that are going to drop soon, so that we won't be overwhelmed by Sam if he is one of the last two and starts getting a lot of screen time because it's just him and one other guy.

The smart move for him, would be to use it to relocate. Assuming that he can fit all his gear into it at one time, he should consider building a food supply and then just abandoning camp and moving about until he finds a really good spot, rather than venturing out only to have to fight his way back to his regular camp location. The return trips are probably going to exhaust him much more than letting the current take him where it wants to.

Just finished episode 6 and I've gotta say I genuinely like all 4 remaining guys: Alan, Sam, Lucas and Mitch. I also think that is the order in which I would rank their chances of winning the competition. As a 'sheltered city kid' I've never really been exposed to any serious wilderness survival stuff (never gone camping either), and this show really opened my eyes.

I really enjoy the tips that are written on the bottom of the screen during the episodes. It feels like I can learn so much from just watching these guys. In a way, I feel like every man should try something like this once (though not on Vancouver island) in his life just to enrich himself.

I've seen the first episode. I have the rest DVRed, but I haven't had time to watch them. In the first episode, they were talking about it taking 90 days, or even a year before the last person stood alone. That's a long time. If someone can get a stable food, fire, and shelter situation going, that will help. I'd think eventually worn out clothes and shoes could be a factor, unless they somehow make clothes out of hides. Would depend on some way of sewing the clothes. Health care is an issue too. I sprained my ankle two weeks ago. It's only a nuisance in my current situation, but I think it might be a show stopper for them. I hope that it takes a while for the 2nd to last person to give up. I want to see how they handle things in the longer term.

Mitch is my favourite, Lucas is also capable guy but he is in some kind of midlife crisis,Alan is the most expirienced,Sam has a crazy vibe to me and I am suprised that he got so far.

I wonder about hunting. As in, are they allowed to hunt? I haven't watched the first few episodes yet, but I have watched 4,5, and 6 and so far it has only showed them eating fish, mussels, crab, and seaweed. I know at least one or two of the remaining guys has a bow with 6 arrows. Why not go down to the beach and shoot a sea gull or some other bird. Hell, getting your hands on an otter would give you quite a bit of protein for several weeks. Even if they don't have a bow and arrows or a slingshot, they aren't hard to built. I have built them before when I was younger and I even managed to kill a small bird. I would think there has to be a large amount of small wild life they could subsist on. Hell, I live in the south and if I wanted I could have a rabbit or three within a day or two just from my yard.

Good predictions by both Swooper and Suits.

I like all the guys on the show for the most part, but I was glad to see Lucas tap out.

In fact, this most recent episode was the only time I ever found myself fast forwarding, and it was due to yet another one of his emo monologues.

I give him props on the boat and the yurt, and I think he may have had the best food situation of the final four guys, but the hipster insecurity seemed to triumph over all of that.

Mitch was a surprise for sure, I'm not sure that he ever mentioned the family member problem previously that he revealed during the most recent episode.

My money has been on Alan for a while now, and I still expect to see him the winner next week.

Sam has a lot of persistence and heart but he's spiralling down harder each episode .

Both guys have shown they're able to survive there, the show will end when there's an incident or they just can't take it any more.

Alan is much better equipped for survival, especially mentally. But Sam might take the prize if Alan decides that he doesn't have anything more to prove.



Lucas clearly suffered from a lack of male role models, but I hope this experience served as his rite of passage into manhood. I fear his mother will drag him back into dependence on her though.

Sam is going to have to find a better source of food than his Rock mouse traps if he wants to survive. Alan definitely has the advantage food wise. He also seems more mentally stable. I guess you can credit his maturity for that.

I'm surprised Sam is still in it. No way he's only eating one mouse a day, is there? He's gotta be also eating some mussels, limpets, and seaweed right? He talks a lot about his wife; I thought he was gonna tap out already. I think it's a matter of time before Alan wins.

Lucas was doing so well... He just had a mental breakdown. Too bad, that boat and yurt were sweet... He even had enough time to make a musical instrument!

Mitch just surprised us all. Maybe he did talk about his mom before but it was edited out?

Lucas has serious skills. He was the most creative participant. The boat and the superior shelter proved this.

But emotionally, he wasn't as strong.

I think that Sam's emotional state has been played up a little bit to add drama. But he is pretty young and has a less proven sense of masculinity which could mean that he either drops out or that he absolutely refuses to drop out.

My money is definitely on Alan...if he wants it. He seems to be getting the best food out of all the participants. He appears to be the only participant that can actually fill his stomach from time to time.

He also has good knowledge and settled into a good location and even found a small cave to live in, so that he didn't have to get extremely creative.

I think that the most obvious prediction is that Sam can't take being away from his family and Alan wins by default, but I'm curious to see how things turn out. I can still so the producers throwing a twist our way.

Hopefully the finale involves less emoting and more survival skills.

I've actually learned a lot from this show. Whenever they show a 'survival tip' on the screen I write it down and do a little research myself. It's good stuff.
