52% of Japanese oppose same sex marriage
http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2014/03...VaVFPlVhBc

One of the memes that gets spread around when it comes to discussing gay marriage in the US is that those who oppose it are typically doing so because of their Christian beliefs. I've always pointed out that it's really has to do with social conservatism and having "old school" (for the lack of a better term) values. The confusion is that in the West religious values are typically aligned with these old school values so people tend to view them interchangeably.

I always pointed out East Asian societies as a counter example since they are cultures that are not based on Judeo-Christian values but are still socially conservative - especially when compared to most first world nations.

That said, gay marriage is now legal in Tokyo but no where else in East Asia:

Funny how we hear constant talk about homophobic and anti-gay the US but the US still beat Japan to having the first gay marriages.

Although Western media is spinning it as "Tokyo legalizes gay marriage" it's actually just a partnership certificate that businesses aren't expected to honor. It's only valid in Shibuya (a central ward of Tokyo with around 200,000 residents) and doesn't offer any new rights, aside from maybe being able to sign a lease together.

Japan's constitution says that marriage is allowed "only on the mutual consent of both sexes" so it would take a huge lobbying campaign to ever make it possible.

Japan in general is pretty resistant to Western cultural movements so hopefully it doesn't get much further than this.

The last time Japan adopted Western cultural movements:

-- "muscular = gay" becomes the local gay man stereotype in Japan, courtesy of Royal British Sailors during Victorian England.

-- Social Darwinism became the basis of its Imperial rise, to the point it even led to the 731 Brigade and its constant attempts to destroy Korean culture.

-- Enough said.

So even when they legalize it, Japan basically does what libertarians and some conservatives wanted (perhaps even more watered down).

Good. I hear sometimes that Japan is pre-60s West in the present day so I hope it does not follow the same path.

And if I remember correctly, Japan's constitution has never been amended yet.

Interesting article. There is a notion the West, that conservatism belongs in poor developing countries, and is some sort of hindrance to development. Although as the author pointed out, East Asia has large sums of wealth and development, yet rejects the SJW narrative you have over here. Even in mainland Europe, the whole feminist movement doesn't come across as potent as it does in the 'anglosphere'.

Yes the wording of Article 24 is quite a lucky coincidence:

"Marriage shall be based only on the mutual consent of both sexes and it shall be maintained through mutual cooperation with the equal rights of husband and wife as a basis."

It was obviously intended to make the husband and wife equal partners in the marriage (as opposed to the idea that 'the husband owns the wife'), but because of the wording "based only on" it may have coincidentally protected the definition of marriage.

That said, the government isn't particularly respectful of the constitution, and the supreme court is pretty soft.

Basically, Japan does things to appear "On the surface" what they want outsiders (I'm using this term on purpose) to think, it causes a lot less trouble that way, while doing their own thing in the background. This happens with many parts of life, this is pretty much a cultural thing.

Feminism will never "take hold" it will just "appear" to. I've said it many times before, but Ill say it again, what's REALLY going on is something that will not be put on any news outlet in the west, simply because Japan has already given the west "The goods" They aren't even aware of the possibilities that there could be another world right under their noses.

My favorite thing about Japan's conservatism? No western politics or social issues in video games, makes SJWs pissed!

Anyone familiar with the Senran Kagura franchise would know that something like this wouldn't get made by western devs:

It has facilitated the whole 'decline' you see in the Anglosphere so to speak. But there are forces at work which run a lot more deeper than that. I have met supposed feminists in Germany and Russia who just don't carry that same resentment and hatred which you see the Anglosphere feminists having. They generally have an approach to their own personal relationships with men which is still pretty healthy, compared to what you see in the U.K, U.S.A or Canada.

Asia similar to Russia and I suppose a lot of other parts of the world, especially the developing regions. Have the approach of imitating the best parts of the Western culture without taking on the bad.

It gets even better when Jap devs just plain don't give a fuck, though:
