Beta sneakiness on girls' iPhones
As an avid daygamer focusing on the 18-28 age group, the great majority of phone numbers I get are iPhones. I know this because in iMessage, the Apple text message app, such phone numbers appear blue when typed in, rather than green for non-Apple-registered numbers.

What I've been surprised about is the fact that most of these iPhone numbers also have "read receipts" enabled--that is, these womens' phones have been set up to notify senders when text messages have been actually seen by the women. This intrigues me because that is NOT the default setting: unless specifically enabled by an obscure toggle switch deep in the Setup menu, iPhones normally will only acknowledge that a text message is delivered, but not that it was seen/read.

My assumption is that most women are outsourcing the setup of their iPhones to geek beta-orbiters, who indeed "help" their female objects of secret affection, but that these geeks are surreptitiously enabling "read receipts" as a back-door. That is, the betas are enabling this setting in the hope they will be able to know when their own text messages to these girls has been seen. One of the reasons I assume this is that, in general, women are very conscious and cognizant of "infosec:" if they knew they could be monitored, they would not usually enable this.

Anyone seen this? Any other thoughts on why so many women have this setting enabled?

I thought this feature is mandatory on the all new iPhone? I know girls are always bickering at each other about unread texts and with notification as proof, haha!

I thought this was a default setting as well. I turned it off so the girls who text me don't know if I've read their messages or not.

It defaults to the 'yes' setting - so probably they're just too ignorant to realize that people know when they're not responding to their texts.

Or they do know, and deliberately set it as such so they can get a kick out of knowing that guys are pining for their replies in vain like abused puppies. I would not put it past most girls today.

Myself, I don't use iMessage at all since it's a data suck, and it sometimes makes your Messages app glitchy.

But even if I still did, I wouldn't leave it on. No need to give the girls more info than necessary.

I think you could be on to something here. We all like to know if we're being ignored and for needy, insecure betas this need is especially high.

I did a quick survey in my own phone of iMessage users I've been texting with in the last couple of days. Only 2 of 8 males (25%) have read receipts enabled while 6 of 7 females (86%) have them enabled. Since it's girls , not guys, that usually play text messaging games such as purposely not responding after reading a text, this finding is kind of counter-intuitive.

I was out a while ago with a group of friends at a bar and I remember the topic of these read receipts coming up. Several of the girls in the group (all of whom had read receipts enable on their phone) weren't aware that they had them set to 'on' or at least didn't know that it was possible to turn them off. This further supports your theory, although it's possible that the default is just that they're on and they would have to know to turn them off. It might not be a beta changing the 'off' default to 'on'.

Personally I have read receipts on, because I really don't give a fuck if people see that I have read their message but not responded yet. Occasionally, it even works out better because a girl will send a second, follow-up text if she's seen you've read her text but haven't responded and it's been a while. If I really didn't want someone to see a read receipt, I just wouldn't open their iMessage. I can see the contents of it (or at least the first couple of lines) on my home screen/notifications anyhow without it being acknowledged as "read" to the sender. You have to actually open the text in Messages for it to show as "read" to them.

RE: Beta sneakiness on girls' iPhones
First off, your hypothesis is so out of touch with reality. You're saying most girls have read reports turned on because a beta set their phone up for them and turned read reports on?
Most girls are stupid, don't get me wrong (especially with technology), but the OS on an iPhone is easy enough to navigate that a girl can turn read reports on or off if she wanted to.

Back on the discussion about read reports:
There is absolutely no benefit to having read receipts turned on unless you want to passive-aggressively read someones message and purposely not reply so they know just how mad you are at them. Hence why women typically have read reports on while men (that aren't drama queens) generally have them off.

Maybe guys are more technically inclined to browse through their phone's settings page once in a while whereas women don't really care turning off an otherwise default function.

I turn off pointless functions that are on by default.

RE: Beta sneakiness on girls' iPhones
I'd find it interesting if iMessage had a degree of reciprocity like WhatsApp does.

WhatsApp has read receipts as of a few months (which you can't turn off) ago but they also have a 'Last Online' feature which you can turn off. The catch is that if you turn off your 'Last Online', so people can't see the last time you were online, you also can't view when other people were 'Last Online'.

People might change their decision to have/not have read receipts if they could only see read receipts of others when their own was turned on.

RE: Beta sneakiness on girls' iPhones
One thing I noticed is that a lot of girls and guys are using the latest OSX and its iMessage app, which folds your texts into a nice UI while using your laptop. And iPad.

I started noticing a few folks who only have read receipts enabled when using the iPad or MacBook -- but NOT on the iPhone.

I think that could explain it? I believe the iPad and desktop app have them enabled by default, while in my experience the iPhone does not.

(Alternatively, maybe the exact version of iOs someone got the phone with, determines it. So OS updates won't change the default, but getting a new phone on a x.1 or x.2 rather than a version x iOs, could have a different default.)

No, I think Col. Tigh is right. I got an iPhone 6 a few months ago, and I never messed with that setting. Found it a couple months ago and by default it was off. Weird, that's just the way it was for me anyway.

But yeah, I've never understood those people that will go out of their way to enable this. The 'typing' bubble is already annoying enough. I like it so that I know when someone else is writing back, but it's always in the back of my mind when I'm writing something up that they know how long it's taking me to write. It's like a fucking timer. It's a burden.

Just me?

Plus, a lot of my texting/communicating is done through Facebook chat, and not only do they have the 'typing' bubble too, but they also have the 'seen at' notification by default with no way of turning it off. That's even worse. Who would go out of their way to enable that just for themselves for texting?

RE: Beta sneakiness on girls' iPhones
^^ On the 'typing bubble' shit. At times it does my head in too.

However, I sent my girl the F. Rodger Devlin 'Home Economics' series of essays the other day with a directive to read & comment back.

It was hilarious to watch the hamster in action as she would start a reply, then stop, then start again, then stop & so on.

Two good things came of this. As mentioned, watching the live hamster was hilarious but also I could see she was retyping her replys multiple times to make sure she 'said the right thing'.

That's when I know my frame is on point & I am leading the dance.

Not to derail the thread but WhatsApp read receipts can be turned off through settings -> privacy

Is that like the seen tick on facebook? If so, I personally like it. When messaging people who arent dramatic and play games... it helps a lot. If a friend messages, I feel obliged to give a short answer or something just to let them know. The seen tick is helpful as if the other person sees it, they should pm me more... if not, then they dont have to.

I dont get why you would kick up a fuss about this when messaging/texting girls though. It barely matters if shes seen it or not and probably matters even less if she knows if youve seen hers(unless you are trying to cover up your fb/text addiction).

It appears I may well be out of touch here. It was my mistaken assumption that read receipts defaulted to "off," which is incorrect. I have had read receipts disabled for so long that I forgot that the setting is enabled by default.

I've never understood.

I'll write replies in Notes, then copy/paste/send them. It throws them off like the children they are.

It serves three purposes: It sets frame. It also keeps them wondering what/if you're writing and/or they think you have a way to work around the "typing bubble".

I've had chicks reply: "How did you type without me seeing the bubble?" That opens up a HUGE opportunity to neg them. I usually reply "Wow, you must have nothing else to do but stare at your phone and wait for me to write, eh?" Or "Well since you confirmed your iPhone is surgically attached to your hand, you will answer my calls & texts immediately."

I never tell them my work around.

“….and we will win, and you will win, and we will keep on winning, and eventually you will say… we can’t take all of this winning, …please Mr. Trump …and I will say, NO, we will win, and we will keep on winning”.

That's a really good way to get around it. I'll admit I think I've done that once or twice for things that I knew would take a while to type up and get the right words and at the same time didn't want to look like a wannabe-Shakespeare.

Also, sometimes you can notice the typing bubble pop up..... then go away..... then the message will send. The time between the typing bubble disappearing and the message being sent is spent proofreading the message. General rule of thumb, the ratio of how long they proofread it to how long the message is will tell you how important it is to them (because they spent all that time making sure every word was said perfectly).

Just something I've picked up on.

In whatsapp the checkmarks turn blue to indicate your message has been read whether or not you last seen or any of that activated. Sometimes I fall asleep or put my phone away with a message box open, if that girl messages me it will immediately shows as read. I know this because I frequently wake up to a whole paragragh of messages like "Ya no me quieres?" "ya tienes otras?" "veo que estas en linea, contestameeee!" filled with broken heart emojis. Does imessage work the same way? It might be something to keep in mind.
