Oh man, you couldn't possibly have given yourself a better introduction. I haven't read past the Ennis introduction arc on Crossed, which was good and fucked up, but Preacher is arguably the best comic book series ever made. Nothing even comes close to it as pure entertainment. While it isn't quite as intellectual as most of the other classics (see: Grant Morrison, Neil Gaiman, and Alan Moore), the operative word there would be "quite".

I agree, film is much more limited in the type of story it can tell. Fortunately television post-writers strike just keeps getting better. Well, if you know where to look.

Hey, can we also talk about other comics in here?

I've actually been reading two different comics recently,

one is called "Nail Biter" and the other is "Uber"

BOth awesome and graphic as hell.

Nail biter is about a fictional town that spawned the 16 worst serial killers in the world's history.

Uber is a revisionist history comic set during WW2. The concept is simple, "what if Germany discovered the technology to create super soldiers?" Both awesome as hell.

Apologies for the late review, I had some personal issues come up.

#2 The Name of the Game

Look at the upper left corner of the cover for this issue, recognize it? You should, it is the first cover! I love this reference, and how a photo for each member of The Boys is falling out of a classified folder which is sitting on a pile of blood. Immediately following that is some evidence of their handiwork, specifically a mace that had to be surgically removed from the temple of Lord Horus. Goddamn. Rayner knows exactly who and what she's unleashed on the world, but she's already done it and won't go back now.

Oh god, Butcher's form of comforting Hughie is brilliant. That little rat-dog shits and the owner just leaves it there for someone to step in, and Butcher gives the command to Terror to teach it a lesson.



While this is happening it shows Butcher assembling The Boys, starting with The Frenchman. This is one of my favorite characters (just wait until we get to his backstory) and we find him reminiscing over lost love in a coffee shop until he is rudely interrupted by some businessmen saying some very rude things about the French. So he headbutts one in the face, punches a guy's jaw off, and knees the last one in the face. Butcher encounters the scene and Frenchie instantly forgets about it, kissing Butcher on the neck out of joy (with which Butcher finds amusing and uncomfortable simultaneously).

We return to Butcher and Hughie, and Butcher explains that he knows who Hughie is and what happened to him. He continues by stating that The Boys are the only team capable of preventing and avenging the actions of supes, like what happened to kill Hughie's girlfriend.

I AM LOSING MY SHIT!

I LOVE the introduction to The Female (of the Species), who is easily the most terrifying force we've yet seen. She quietly knocks on the safehouse of some assholes who didn't pay the mob, and when they open the door she rushes in and murders them all, finally ripping the face off of one and throwing it against the window. Butcher's grim expression is fantastic here. It doesn't make him happy, but it is a necessary power for what they're going to be doing.

The next exchange between Hughie and Butcher contains my very favorite dialogue so far, and is something that perfectly explains the world we live in today:









Whenever I am plagued by conspiracy theories or feelings of hopelessness, I think back to this and how it makes everything fit. I find it to be the most comforting ugly truth I've ever read.

Also Hughie gets to join the team because he has felt direct loss, and because he didn't ask for money. He might be a pussy right now, but he's got a lot of potential.

Mother's Milk. DRINKING OUT OF A MUG THAT SAYS "BAD ASS". Sorry, I'm geeking out a bit already. This guy is easily one of the best characters in the entire series. He's obviously physically capable, but he also has the brains and leadership qualities required to get the job done. He's also very empathetic, spending his time trying to fix the community. Unfortunately, his hoodrat wannabe daughter is included in this community, and she walks in and completely disrespects him in front of "Uncle Billy". Butcher sets this right, as he follows her outside where she has joined some thugs. One of them promptly brandishes a gun tucked into his waist, which Butcher immediately grabs and crushes into dust, and gives them some advice as well:



Janine gets some advice too and is visibly taken aback by how Butcher demands her to respect her father, a man who has sacrificed everything for her.

Butcher and Hughie are shown having one last bit of conversation, and Butcher plays a little dirty. He tells Hughie about how A-Train laughed about his girlfriend's death and invites him to check out the operation in New York by throwing him a few grand in an envelope.

Thus ends the first arc, masterfully setting up everything to follow in just two issues. If these reviews haven't convinced you to start reading yet, I don't know what to tell you.

This is only partially related, but I really think they could make a good Punisher TV series if they got the same people who did the Daredevil one on board and used Ennis stories. I'm currently watching DD and loving it, even though I never really liked the character in the comics.

Did you guys see that Hitman's best/worst/best superhero team is back for a new miniseries? It is called All-Star Section Eight and it is brilliant so far. DC deserves props for being willing to publish this stuff, I was laughing so hard at how subversive and offensive it is. Highly recommended!

I have to check out the All-Star series sometime.

Apparently whoever does All-Star Batman makes him a particularly magnificent bastard. There's a few panels I've read where he's fucking with Green Lantern (he paints his entire safehouse yellow, which is somehow GLs weakness), he treats Robin like shit, and he tells everybody he's the goddamned Batman. Funny stuff.

Sort of, yeah. If I recall correctly it's called "genesis" and it gives you the voice of God or something. It's been awhile since I read the book.

Ah ok, I thought he was the anti-christ because of the fucked up bible he found, so I thought those guys on the plane with him were anti-christ hunters.

I hope they tone down that chick's superwoman bullshit, it really got in the way of enjoying the episode.

The very beginning kind of confused me, with the film grain space stuff, I thought something different was going on, like someone watching an old film, but it was mixed with cgi, so that really fucked with me.

edit; One thing I got a kick out of, was on the tv in the bar scene, they were reporting Tom Cruise exploding at a scientology thing, I could hear that stupid toothy laugh, then pop. Fuckin hilarious.

I've read untold thousands of comic books in my life and the Preacher saga has to be in the all time top 5. It's magnificent and perfect, from start to finish.

I love it way too much to even waste a minute of my time watching whatever watered down bullshit version some Hollywood hacks have made for TV. I'm not watching some British asshole play Jesse or some black chick play Tulip.

I'll just reread the books again. They got it right the first time.
