I recently stumbled upon a new smartphone app dedicated to improve someones language abilities. As many of you are widely traveled and interested in learning foreign languages I think this app will contribute to your success in those efforts.

Tandem App
The App works basically like a social media platform: you create a profile (photo, short description of you, languages that you can speak and the ones you want to learn/ gain practise in). As soon as your profile got approved you see a list of persons with similar "language-backgrounds" (e.g. you speak spanish and english and want to learn french, than you see people either want to learn the same language or are fluent in one/more of them).

   

Additionally to your profile you can add an "argument" defined as an "ice breaker". This could either be a suggestion for a topic you want to discuss or a funny sentence/ a your wish to learn a certain language...

When you tap on one profile you can initiate a text-chat or call.
Especially when you talk to a native in his language he usually corrects you and vice versa. So it's ensured that you immediately recognise your mistakes. When you call a person you can train you speaking ability and you usually to talk with nice people.

I use this app since three days now and so far I met some really interesting people and got to write/talk a lot.

Anyway, another interesting aspect of the app (from a players POV), is the possibility of meeting some nice girls through the app. I have not had the chance yet to meet someone because nobody was in my area (you get results from all over the world) but the app delivers the possibility to filter your results based on your location. Maybe when the user base is rising you can put this concept into action. I'll definitely keep an eye on that and inform you about possible results.

As someone who is actively trying to learn multiple languages I really like the idea of this app, but there is a fucking unbelievable ratio of m-f users at probably at least 50-1. There does not appear to be a way to filter for just females users either.



Additionally, it seems as though only Western Europeans currently use this app. Tabling this shit for a later date.

I'd be surprised that the m:f ratio is 50:1 given that women love languages and getting something that they love for nothing. This app promises this provision in...er...tandem.

Check it out for yourself, it's really not much of an exaggeration. It's a very solid platform, but it is just a re-hashed idea of Italki and Livemocha without the talent. If one was really interested in this space this app would be a complete waste of time considering the other superior options.
