Superheroes expect a suspension of belief, but it was made a bit unclear. It's not only that his senses are heightened - he possesses a 3D perception making him able to effectively see in his back. Also his master Stick was no lowly blind martial artist, but he had plenty of supernatural powers and Daredevil certainly learned a few things from him.

Superheroes are of course unrealistic in many instances - not only power-wise. Their very existence would change and impact the world so much, that nothing would remain the same.... sports would be gone, law enforcement & military would be dramatically changed - either chaos or severe dictatorship would reign.

They partly examined that thought with Kingdom Come:



It's nothing more than a fairytale, because a world where a few individuals have powers surpassing normal humans by a factor 1000+ is a world that would be much more of a shithole than it is by now:

They make several references to him being able to meditate and heal faster than normal. I don't know if that's true to the comics or not, but they definitely said it more than once. Also, his heightened senses are almost a form of precognition; he knows where punches will land before they're thrown and all that bullshit.

For people hating on the Fisk portrayal, just remember this was Kingpin's origin story, too. In the last episode (SPOILERS), he basically loses his shit and says something along the lines of "these people don't deserve a better tomorrow, they deserve to drown in their own filth!". If there's a second season of this I imagine Fisk will be a lot more like Kingpin after snapping and a stint in jail.

I'm glad so many people here have read Garth Ennis. Even if you don't read comics, I would recommend his work to everyone on this forum.

Read the following:
Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe is probably the best place to start. The title is very clear on what to expect.
His run on Punisher and Punisher MAX
Preacher
The Boys
Hitman
Fury MAX, which might be his best work. Be warned, it might make you weep manly tears at the end.

His bibliography as a whole is very uncompromising and unique. Preacher specifically is absolute genius. I can't wait for the AMC show.


So yeah, I still haven't watched the show this thread is actually about, I'm waiting for my Dad to get back from vacation so I can watch it with him. But we should really make a Garth Ennis thread, especially with Preacher on the way.

The last episode was disgusting with that close shot of vanessa fisk are being shown with her slipping the rock over her wrinkly fingers.

Kingpin ruins this series honestly. Not to mention it feels very low budget in the cinematography. I know it doesn't have Game of Thrones production budgets available, but I expected better.

It doesn't hurt that DD/Murdock is a weak character which I never liked.

Considering Time Warner owns DC and HBO, I would love to see HBO produced DC shows that do 10-13 episode runs for 60-80 million dollar costs. Batman, JLA, Suicide Squad, etc would be amazing in such a format with those resources.

Binge watched it over the last couple of days.

Spoilers below:




I likes the feel and the tone of the show right off the bat. I like the dark cinematography and themes in the show.
I liked how they showed Daredevil battling his own soul and mind about whether or not to kill.
I also don't get the "beta" claims about Fisk. He loved Vanessa but never did he come off as beta in my opinion. He told her directly that if she wanted to leave him, she could and she would never hear from him again.

Apparently Netflix is doing a bunch of these shows with Marvel and will do more superhero shows. I hope Fisk is back again next season in some capacity and I think he will be.

I love this show. I really like how Vincent D'onoforio plays the Kingpin actually (even the strange speech pattern). His character development is really solid and I expect to see him back next season.

I'm excited to see the Punisher next season too. He's a character made for good television and would fit in well with the gritty combat in the series.

It's a bit surprising to see that Matt actually doesn't get into a relationship with nurse Claire or Karen. It's really quite red pill because a hero in a relationship has a big weakness.

The only problem I have with the show is that Matt Murdoch's 'American' accent is very bad and sometimes throws off my sense of immersion. Otherwise, let's see more of this please, Netflix!

I don't feel it's worth its own thread (someone might disagree) but I just watched the first three episodes of the second Netflix Marvel show, Jessica Jones (who I had never heard about until articles about the show started appearing).

I'll probably watch the remaining ten episodes - though word on the Internet even among people who loved it seems to be that the first half is the best - but so far I don't find it nearly as enjoyable as Daredevil.
I don't really have an issue with superpowered female protagonists, but so Jessica Jones' super strength is only a relatively minor factor (albeit crucial in some scenes), and she's basically a snarky, anti-social, depressed, mildly alcoholic private detective. Krysten Ritter does a decent enough job in the role, the character is just not very likable, nor particularly interesting.

The same could be said for most of the other characters.
Carrie-Anne Moss playing a bitchy, bossy lesbian lawyer (in what appears to be a completely irrelevant lesbian divorce love triangle something). An okay but slightly stupid female radio host friend of Jones'. Some forgettable neighbours. Luke Cage (I think he's supposed to be getting his own show as well?) as the only really likable character and Jessica's go to guy for sex (several extended and marginally graphic sex scenes, though they seem to be included more for "edginess" than because showing them actually serve much of a purpose in a show like this).
And former Doctor Who David Tennant as a psychopathic, mind controlling main villain - who only really started to show up in the flesh in the third episode, so I'll hold my reservations on him until later.

Very little fighting against minor bad guys, so obviously more time spent on character drama than Daredevil. Which might be fine if I cared about the characters.

Anyway, as expected the show seems to be getting rave reviews everywhere, with many proclaiming it better than Daredevil. I'm guessing the "strong (bitchy) female lead" is a hit with most mainstream reviewers.

That is why I think the show was so strong. It shows a man that is vulnerable. Other super hero movies shows/movies show men that are impermeable to anything. Dare Devil constantly gets fucked up which shows he is human. The show does a great job showing both the badass hero and the human portion of Dare Devil. It creates the image that a man can still be a hero/vigilante without any kind of special ability (even though he can kind of see when blind).

^^ The Jessica Jones show is like a concoction of women who utterly behave like men and are proud of it. Of course if you do that, then the overwhelming majority of people won't like them.

Yeah lesbians will and the "girlpower"-girls, but not many beyond that. I think that very soon almost all content will be unwatchable.

We have been seeing the world destabilize over the past few years. Racial tensions are increasing. The strongest nation in the world is growing a vagina. American people are becoming sensitive and offended by everything.

Jessica jones is a piece of trash. It was unwatchable. I gave up watching it.

Think the name was Ray Stevenson. Good match for the punisher.

Another option would be Frank Grillo. I like this guy since I saw Kingdom and the purge.

I ended up watching all 13 episodes of Jessica Jones. It wasn't terrible on an individual episode basis - and aside from Punisher Warzone it must have been by far the bloodiest and goriest Marvel show or movie I've seen - but it's not a show I'd recommend.

Krysten Ritter's performance was solid, the character is just a snarky bitch. She actually summed it up herself in one of the last episodes when she said "he's a good guy [about Luke Cage], I'm an asshole."
Charming. But I'm sure just the kind of female role model a lot of Western women - and plenty of emasculated men - like these days.

(Some spoilers below.)

David Tennant (my favourite Doctor Who) did a great job as the psychopathic, sadistic, murderous-by-proxy mind controlling Kilgrave.
Which leads me to my probably biggest problem with the series. I don't remember the last time I've watched a show or a movie where I to quite such a strong degree was thinking "why the hell doesn't someone just shoot this guy?". There were numerous chances over the last 9-10 episodes to kill him with no or little risk to anyone else's lives (admittedly one man, not woman, aimed for that in the first half of the season, but then he got all weird, and drugged up and evil himself).
So many lives and so much torture and pain could have been spared if Jessica Jones - backed by her closest female compatriots - hadn't been on some mostly selfish personal redemption trip that in the end failed miserably.
