DC cost of living
Just curious what you guys are paying for rent each month and in which area.

Some rents I've paid (most recent first):

$600/month for a house in Kensington near White Flint Mall. Had two roommates
$550/month for a townhouse in Montgomery Village. Had one roommate.
$425/month for a townhouse in Germantown. Had one roommate.

I was way out in the 'burbs, but one thing that strikes me if you want to live in a "good area" is that you pay NYC prices for obviously inferior nightlife and lifestyle.

$900/mo for a townhouse in SW Waterfront. Three roommates, 3 min walk to L'enfant metro, 5 min from the national mall, 15 min walk to Chinatown. Perfect in almost every way except the only decent bar within walking distance is Cantina Marina.

RE: DC cost of living
I'm looking for a place to move into start of July, the prospective places I've found so far:

$750/mo for a basement apartment in Gaithersburg
$860/mo for a studio in Silver Spring
$700/mo for a room w/ 3 roommates near Chevy Chase

I'm really hesitant about roommates because I had three in school that thrashed our house and left me to fix it. I did my best but we all still have an outstanding debt from the complex that rented to us.

I'm still tossed up between getting a room or getting a studio. A room is cheaper, but you have roommate liability.

The rent regardless of the area, if you're within 15 miles of DC its crazy expensive. I was looking into moving to Baltimore a while back and was seeing 1br row houses for $700-$800

Well I left in 2007 so not sure if rents had gone up since then.
But I used to pay $850-$950 for a studio, I changed a couple over the years - 16&R St. then 14&N... you can always stumble back home from Dupont or Adams Morgan or U St. so you save a bit on cabs.

Roosh, I've rented out a room in my house for $650 (all inclusive) with walking distance to Red Line Metro (Wheaton area). Maybe I should charge more. Otherwise rent is ridiculous.

MY purchase was made in 2003 although prices have not appreciated nor depreciated much so I am actually happy. Arlington is probably the most stable neighborhood in VA due to close proximity to metro and all federal govt jobs.
