NFL makes Sarah Thomas first full-time female official

Quote: Sarah Thomas will become the first full-time female official in NFL history.

The league made the groundbreaking announcement Wednesday, promoting the 19-year veteran after eight years with Conference USA.

"Knowing that the journey an official goes through," Thomas said in a sit-down interview with NFL Media's Judy Battista, "pee-wee, high school, if you're fortunate enough to even go to the junior college level, small college, Division I, then of course the National Football League. But you never dream that this would really come true."

Thomas comes backed with a strong resume, having been the first female official to work a major collegiate bowl game. She joins eight other referees granted first-time employment for league games.

If she's qualified for it and does the job to an acceptable standard, I have no problem with this.

If feminists use this as an excuse to bitch and moan or to engage in an epidemic of self-congratulation, I have a huge problem with them.

But if she genuinely earned it, I feel no different about this than any many getting the job.

It's really a non-story. Every man here knows that women occasionally do things at the same level as a man.

Women have even been known to invent fire escapes.

She actually has credentials, this isn't pandering by finding a random woman. She's been officiating for nearly 16 years, starting at high school and working her way up to NCAA, and she was first scouted by the NFL in 2013.

Not everything is a feminist conspiracy.

I agree with Suits and Clever Alias, but there will be problems, just as there has been with female officials in NBA and the EPL(English Premier Leaugue). Men are generally better suited to adjudicating competitive sports.

Female refs are more hardlined and to the book. They don't like to use thier own judgment to "feel" the game out and adjust thier calls. The truth is as a official you can't always follow the book, you have to let the game flow and sometimes that means ignoring some petty calls. This is where the idea of how refs call the games different in the playoffs versus a regular game. Not evrey game will be displayed as how the rule book transcribes its the refs own judgment to see how they are willing to see the big picture to help move the game along successfully.

If she has the skills, which it looks she does, it won't be a issue. She won't be a head Umpire on the field. She will likley get her start being a line judge then move up from there. I don't know her background but maybe she came from a football home and this is how she got involved when young with the game.

In these cases where a woman earns her way the real way 95% of men would have no issue. This is the equality I support in that the best person gets the job. If she was the most qualified of the candidates then you wish her the best.

I actually encourage this. I would rather see more female refs then have to suffer hearing annoying women trying to call games and be all over ESPN. The refs rarely talk and you don't notice them.

NFL Ref isn't a bad gig. I think it's 65-100k for 25 weeks of work. There is a lot of extra stuff you do such as study, review, and prep each week but from what I understand many are able to work another job as they Ref.

I agree wholeheartedly with the bold, but the below is my greatest fear. I have no problem with a female referee or even a female President for that matter, but no doubt the feminists and the SJWs will use this as a springboard and come out and push for more female refs and more female presence in professional sports focusing on gender and not ability.

I was reading an article not too long ago about this that speculated that this could be tied to the Ray Rice controversy as a way to appease more women in the aftermath (which the NFL vehemently denied).

With that being said, I hope she succeeds and the SJWs leave it alone.

I am sure she will do just fine physically. If old grey guys can handle it, she will be ok on that front. I just hope the players don't consciously or unconsciously walk on eggshells when in her vicinity. Seeing her in a play like this would be hilarious.





I don't care about the NFL anymore to be honest. A decade of Merica #1 propaganda followed by a couple years of feminist propaganda has made me lose interest. Watching Sportscenter last year was like watching The View.

There are a couple. One of them has been doing it for a while and the other one is a rookie ref. Both of them are 2 of the worst referees in the game especially the rookie one. She can't control the game at all and is too foul/technical happy. I think this is pretty bad. Women simply have no place on a football field. Once you add a women to an environment things change. Players can't be themselves. I think if this continues it'll be tangibly less fun to watch. The nfl is already heavily feminized with the calls their making, (see not being able to grab your balls, marshawn lynch), this will only make it worse. I see no reason why a women shoould want to interject herself in a heavily male atmosphere.

Just lime my example. That NBA lady is following the book to much. She is too happy with her whistle interpreting the game to the book, versus the game in front of her eyes.

Violet Palmer is the worst ref in the league (along with Scott Foster). I don't even know about the other one, but Dee Katner was fired pretty quickly.

Referee types are interesting.

I went to a D2 school and during a period of construction on the university's physical education/sporting complex, most of the parking spaces in the area disappeared under construction equipment. Even after the new arena was finished and usable, there was a real shortage of parking spaces for about 6 months.

Naturally, the few parking spaces near the building were reserved for handicapped parking during this time. Even people with handicapped permits who were with someone who could drop them off and then park their car further away were expected to do so. The only people allowed to park in the handicapped spaces close to the building were people who had no one else who could drive their car for them after dropping them off at the entrance.

I worked campus enforcement part time and was assigned on a big game night to parking direction. I was given strict instructions to only let people who met the very specific requirements park in the one dozen parking spaces near the building.

A referee arrived early, having been told that a special spot awaited him. It had been a misunderstanding by someone in the athletic department. I explained the situation to the official, but he could comprehend not receiving a privileged parking space.

In the end, he was forced to walk two minutes from the nearest parking lot, which was still pretty empty, because he was very early.

As he passed me on his walk to the building, a few minutes later, he and his female companion looked extremely pissed.

I'm impressed by someone who gets paid to run up and down a court all night getting upset about a two minute walk.

I wouldn't be surprised if she started banging a player and leads to a scandal about her allegedly making calls in his teams favor due to their relationship.

Similar to all of the female prison guards banging inmates and smuggling things into them.
