So finally the doomsayers will be mostly right: America won't be Rome, but it'll certainly be speaking a bastardised form of Latin.

I used to think that the U.S. would just end up like some Latin American country. However with the current state of politics and with the way U.S. society is structured i'm going to say future America will probably be closer to present day South Africa than Brazil.

There will be a seething undercurrent of racial politics from the top down based on past political and social grievances.

An unstated caste system with various entitlement programs maintained by various factions because it benefits the status quo.

The most productive members of society will be pulled down to meet the lowest common denominator because of said entitlement and racial resentments. We are already seeing this with Affirmative action.

There will be rampant ghetto violence in the "favela" like cities. Police will be just as violent in response.

Dramatically lowered standard of living by the middle class.

Corruption and nepotism at all levels of government.

An elite upper class who will have nothing to do with the majority unless it's time to fleece them.

Yeah..basically, South Africa.

^^^ I really think all of these things exist on some level now and it's only going to gradually get worse.

The overall wealth of the country + the ability for almost anyone to make decent income (or live on the dole) is what will prevent something like South Africa from happening though....that's a whole other kettle of fish I think.

The US is too hyper-competitive and business-oriented to let anything stop the elite and everyone else from making a buck.

That said, it is turning into a police state to keep the whole place running and the middle class will continue to get squeezed as they are paying their way and also getting squeezed from the bottom and the top.
