Tequila
It's my brother's birthday coming up, and he's always loved tequila. I was thinking of getting him a case or two of really top notch best of the best tequila.

Anyone have any experience in this area, or know of the best places to look at and shop for tequila?

I've never been a big drinker, so if anyone has any recommendations for brands, I'd be grateful.

RE: Tequila
A case or two of tequila? Are you trying to make your brother an alcoholic?

First thing you gotta consider with tequila is what you're looking to do with it...

Is it going to be a shot tequila? sipping tequila? a margarita mixer?

"I was thinking of getting him a case or two of really top notch best of the best tequila."

I think that can cost you a grip if you go "top notch". Especially for "a case or two".

For instance, this stuff is $3.5 million per bottle: http://luxuryes.com/2010/11/3-5-million-...a-capilla/

I think just a bottle of some decent stuff would be fine.

Unless it is some huge milestone like his 100th birthday or something.

As far as tequila itself, I am no expert.

I drank a whole bottle plus to my brain when I was 16 and can barely smell the stuff to this day. I almost died.

I am a tequila connoisseur and I'd recommend that you get him either the Frida Tequila anejo, Casa Noble anejo, or Agua Azul anejo, all are excellent choices and in the $80-100 dollar a bottle range. Patron is highly over-rated although I do like Patron Platinum, a lot of tequila afficiandos hate on it, because it lacks a distinct flavor, but it is IMO by far the world's smoothest tequila (which they advertise), however at $175-225 a bottle it ain't cheap.

Mescal or Don Julio

With Tequila the "gold" versions are the lower end. If you have a Pink Taco restaurant in your area, they specialize in having shitloads of rarely found tequila so you guys can go nuts on his bday.

RE: Tequila
The best tequila I've had is Tres Mujeres Reposado. I tried it while I was in Playa del Carmen, so I don't know how easy it is to find in the states, but it is a pretty damn nice tequila.

This is more of a shot, maybe sipping, tequila

If you want a mixer, for tequilas, try something less expensive.. As a general rule it's a waste to use good liquor on a mixed drink.

Also, a good margarita uses Cointreau, not a margarita mixer, so if you want to try something a little more legit, and a lot better, make your next margarita with a decent tequila, cointreau, and a little bit of lime juice, over ice. Summer is calling!
