Ya, I wouldn't call those events "a major turning point in my life," but having that woman verbally accost me was a big part of the experience of being back in Canada for 8 months from 2012-13, after many years spent living in other countries, especially in Asia.

At the end of the those 8 months, it wasn't hard to make the decision to move permanently to Asia, although I had to suck it up and spend nearly another year completing my undergraduate in the US before I bought my plane ticket to Beijing.

But actually, the more crushing realization out of all of this was not that women can be absolutely horrible to a man that they know nothing about (or to one that they know well), but that the big mistake men are making is not focusing on building friendships with other men.

There were many in the MRA camp that wanted to use me as a poster child after the incident at UofT, but no one from that side of the fence had an interest in who I was as a person.

I ended up choosing Beijing as my landing-zone in Asian for my move back, because I remembered meeting the best people I'd ever met when I studied in Beijing years ago.

I'm back now and I haven't been disappointed.

While it's still hard work to build serious friendships, I've already built something really positive here in just 11 months and I think I'm going to be in a really good place another year from now.

The more time we spend with quality people, the less time we'll spend pissed off at feminists and scuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmm.

Whoa suits, you were there?! I remember when that video came out, I was (and still am) in Ottawa at the time and they were protesting mens issues speakers here, not letting them speak... I also went to China recently and coming back to Canada was really hard. I'm doing my TESL cert in May and then I'm off to Russia, or perhaps China again depending on job offers

I remember Suits writing on his blog after that encounter with the feminist inviting her to sit down over coffee to cordially discuss what exactly their issues were. Respect. I'm sure she wouldn't have done the same for you. It's a lesson I've learned a lot over the last year. I tend to be pretty tolerant of people having opposite viewpoints from me. I've never cut anyone off socially even if they were on the exact opposite end on multiple social issue/political stances. These sort of people will never return the favor.
