Mercosur visa gives you 2 years in Colombia and then you can extend or apply for a 5 year residency.....or it will expire. You have to show you are paying taxes and have economic activity....so that is why I am buying a house and building apartments later this year.
In Brazil, business is more complicated, but I am fine with my 6 months there, as a semi tourist throughout a calendar year.
