I realize this is the travel forum, but I thought it might fit here or be generally useful -- feel free to move it elsewhere.

I just got a job in NYC. Really excited. I prefer Manhattan, but I may be looking to maximize my paycheck and Brooklyn is easy for my commute.

Anyone have suggestions about where to focus my housing search? I would prefer someplace that's more diverse in terms of scene. I don't mind some hipsters, but I'm not big on Williamsburg-- it's too far into hipsterdom for my tastes.

If I do live in Manhattan, I do like the LES. But I'm a lot more familiar with that part of town. But Brooklyn -- I have no idea where to look!

Budget or willingness to live with roommates typically determines where you live.

When are you moving? PM me: I might be able to set you up in Cobble Hill (great neighborhood, for NY anyway, and you can't beat the commute time to Manhattan) for a rent that's at least lower than typical.

Cobble Hill is really nice. One of my favorite neighborhoods.

Lycosidae, what part of the city are going to be working in? If you are on the West side, then Upper Manhattan, Hudson Heights might be worth looking into.

If you are midtown east than Queens (Astoria, Rego Park, Forest Hills, Kew Gardens) are affordable options as well.

Not to hijack but what's a good budget to spend a month or two in NYC? Everyone should live in NYC at least once in their life.

In honor of G Manifesto "break it down" for me. If you don't mind. Maybe a low, middle, nice budget, thanks!!

I guess I should clarify things here:

I'm interested in an opinion about the best places to game in Brooklyn -- less about where's affordable and whatnot. I make pretty good money and I do have a range I'm looking at, but I'm pretty good at finding cheap places to live anywhere. But what I'm not sure about is where there are good concentrations of bars and clubs that are good for pickup so I have good logistics where I live. I'm concerned primarily about logistics for dating and pickup.

I am working downtown (Wall Street) and I'm open to roommate scenarios. Most of my colleagues apparently live in Brooklyn so that's one reason I'm looking at it and it's convenient for my commute.

If you're primarily concerned with pick up and bars that are in close proximity then I would definitely choose the LES. It will probably be about the same cost as BK and will have way hotter girls. Just a great concentration of early twenties chicks that are DTF.

Well the problem with gaming n Brooklyn is that well it is cliquish. The most open to outsiders would be across the bridge , but those are the hipsters and alternatives.

Most of Brooklyn is ethnic which means people stick with their own kind and a lot of gals live with mommy and daddy still .

But they probably make up the hottest group you will see in Manhattan and when in Manhattan they are open. So that is why people recommend Manhattan to game.

It is the difference between getting ONS or getting into a fight with Maria's second cousin Luigi and the local guido's. Do you really want to deal with Vinny Barbarino and his crew? Exactly! Or Vladimir and his crew?

For the meek there is Northern Brooklyn...there you will be dealing with alternatives and liberals!

Hey Sam,

That's a more difficult question then if you were staying for a year. Short-term rental prices and quality can widely vary and you'll be needing a furnished place unless your ok with dropping about a $1,000-$1,500 on a mattress and furnishings. Between Sleepy's Mattress and Ikea you could get a place furnished for that amount and on the day you move in if you co-ordinate ahead of time.

I would check out CraigsList (careful sending money beforehand) and Airbnb for monthly rentals. It can be tough to lock down a nice Airbnb place. I had a hard time of it when I needed something just for a few nights last year when I re-located back, but I did manage to get a nice place (walk-up) on the UES for about $190/night.

Maybe check out StreetEasy.com and look for places that have been sitting for a while. My current apt was sitting for months. The landlord might be willing to work out a short term deal just to get some cash coming in.
