To all the guys with Bangkok experience: I've found some by-the-month hotels that look like they could make for a reasonable budget accommodation while I go into business launch mode.

Two of them are in Silom, near the Saladaeng station:

Does anyone know either of these two areas? From what I understand Silom is the biz district which starts hopping at night. I hear On Nut is a quiet residential neighborhood.

I want to work at third place bangkok in Thonglor and it seems like On Nut is way closer to that area.

there's likely better bkk experts on here than myself..
but since no responses so far, I can say that Silom is an excellent area. Saladaeng is a primetime spot.
I don't recall much about On Nut from my prior trips.

Ok, went to look for an apartment today. I stick to my previous comment "apartment hunting can be a bitch in BKK."

1. Saw the Thonglor area during the day and to be honest it does not look that great and I don't really see any point in paying the extra bucks for an apartment in that area. The prices shoot up like crazy in that area. After 1 and half hours of roaming around I found only one place that was somewhat in my budget.

They charge 20,000 Per month which includes cleaning everyday, breakfast, water, electricity and internet. Its not a bad deal but the room was really small.

I saw other areas in Thonglor and most cater to the luxury apartments crowd. Thonglor IMO is not the area to look for a cheap place. There will be a few expceptions but you need a lot of luck to find these places.

2. Went to the Promphong road which is close to Thonglor. This road is much more upper class than Thonglor and finding a cheap apartment in this area can be harder than finding one in Thonglor. Just to give you an idea, I walked into 2 buildings

You can't get an apartment here unless you sign a 12 month contract and the rate was 80,000 Baht for 2 BR.

They charge 21,000 for a 30 sqm studio.

I got really frustrated and started stopping expats on the road to ask for advise and one guy recommended a place for 7000 baht per month, I BR, it was a complete shithole and was around 6 kms from the Thong lo station.

2, Silom area, I was deceived into believing that the Sathorn and Silom areas are close to each other but they are 5-6 metro stations apart. Don't trust the maps that these apartment owners draw. On the map it seems as if the distance between the apartment and the metro station is only 2 blocks but in reality its around 10 blocks.

Sathorn area, very clean, probably the cleanest area in Bangkok, and high rise buildings all over. It felt like la defense of paris minus all the people in suits. I would have stayed there if it wasnt that far away. It takes 30 mintues to get to Thong lo from Sathorn and the metro ride costs 40 baht one way.

You will get a 43 sq mtr studio for 14000 baht in this building.

I couldn't go to the Silom area because it started raining. I will go there tomorrow if my feet are up to it.

As of now, I would say that you should look for apartments around the on nut station. I walked around in that area in my first week. Its clean and has a very american feel to it - big car showrooms and super stores. Its definitely not the most glamorous area in BKK but it provides good connectivity to Thong lo and other posh areas in BKK.

I will be in Bkk in a month, I plan on looking for a cheap place 15,000 bht max.... On-nut is one area on my radar and Ratchada rd (soi 4-8). I dont know what your budget is or what kind of places/location your looking for, but I know there are nice places in the 10000-15000bht range.

Another recommedation is to get on the site Ajarn.com It is a teaching in Thailand website that has a forum full of good stuff. Check out the apt section, and even throw out a question or ask for some advice from the members. Usually the members are pretty cool and will give you good leads, or just read through the old threads. Lots of expat Bkk vets on there that have lived Thai style for a long time. Good luck, and your one lucky dude to be where your at....June cant get here soon enough...
