What's the idea behind that joke? Was he somewhat effeminate in those times?

MWC is still one of my all time favourite TV shows.

MWC is still one of my all time favourite TV shows.
Between the cheekbones and the hair it wasn't that much of a jump even back then, and then you have Marcy's lack of any particularly feminine qualities...
