I dislike social media too. But in a way, even forums like this is a form of social media. It's also designed to keep our attention. Reputation points, likes etc. People posting what they know will bring in a lot of likes, just to get that dopamine rush and to feel important. It's a social media of ideas instead of selfies.

So one can bash on FB, Twitter and Instagram all day but in the end we're all hooked on social media in one way or another. I will be honest right now and admit that if I take the time to write a long post on here or any other message board I will feel a bit let down if I don't get a single like or response. If it kept happening in perpetuity, I'd likely stop posting altogether.

My guess is that the overwhelming majority of users, if not all, also exaggerate their good/honorable traits or deeds or try to put themselves in the best light possible, to feel that they are better than others on the forum. It's natural human behavior after all. Even if aware of it, it doesn't mean you can fully escape it.
