Threads (1984) - BBC TV Movie About Nuclear War
I saw it for the first time a few weeks ago. Has anybody seen this?

Quote:Threads is a 1984 BAFTA award-winning British television drama, produced jointly by the BBC, Nine Network and Western-World Television Inc.[2] Written by Barry Hines and directed by Mick Jackson, it is a docudrama account of nuclear war and its effects on the city of Sheffield in northern England.

This is one of the most harrowing films I've ever seen. It tries to accurately depict what happens to civilians in the event of nuclear war. I think every world leader should watch this film in order to gain an understanding of the horrors of nuclear war.

If you do try to watch it, listen carefully because some of the accents may be hard to understand for non-British people.

RE: Threads (1984) - BBC TV Movie About Nuclear War
I first seen it about a decade ago, I'm from the UK so I guess it's a bit more well-known here for anyone over 25. It was good, though I can't say for certain if the science holds up to modern scrutiny. The one thing I would say it gets accurate though: if you're not in the higher areas of government, the military or some kind of police in an important area, you're pretty much fucked when a nuclear war breaks out. The only people who'll come out of the aftermath in one piece are the ones with access to resources and health care, or someone on an island in the middle of nowhere that's just the right distance from everywhere.

It does get quite bleak, and some of the scenes are intended to make you very pessimistic about it all.

If you like it, try 'The War Game' as well, shot in more of a documentary style. It was banned for 20 years and only first shown a week before 'Threads' came out. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059894/

I'm British too, but I live in the US. I saw The War Game the day after I saw Threads. It can be seen here:

I saw Threads, The Day After is better:

Junot Diaz had a pretty good short story in the New Yorker about a kid boning an older woman who was also obsessed with Threads and The Day After

Junot Diaz, Miss Lora

Quote:Paloma thought you were being ridiculous. She didn’t want to hear about mutual assured destruction, “The Late Great Planet Earth,” We begin bombing in five minutes, SALT II, “The Day After,” “Threads,” “Red Dawn,” “WarGames,” Gamma World—any of it. She called you Mr. Depressing. And she didn’t need any more depressing than she had already. She lived in a one-bedroom apartment with four younger siblings and a disabled mom, and she was taking care of all of them. That and honors classes. She didn’t have time for anything and mostly stayed with you, you suspected, because she felt bad about what had happened with your brother. It’s not like you ever spent much time together or had sex or anything. Only Puerto Rican girl on the earth who wouldn’t give up the ass for any reason.

This declassified training film from 1958 is pretty cool in a chilling way.
