Trust Me, I'm Lying - Ryan Holiday Discussion
Powerful book.

A must read for all of you SJW's and anti-SJW's.

The mind behind Tucker Max and American Apparel breaks down the world of new media, where people die, billions are lost, reputations ruined by manipulating the blogosphere.

The 1st half is stronger than the 2nd half, but the whole thing is immensely readable.

Anyone else read it?

Didn't read it, but heard the podcast interview on Pickup Podcast (now Art of Charm).

http://theartofcharmpodcast.com/2014/04/...isode-248/

I've said before, it used to be a great podcast, then Jordan got a gf and got big with his business, now when he explains his business he has to spend 10 minutes saying how it's not about getting girls, not about pickup, not like those sleazebag 'get laid' guys, nothing to do with the pickup or manosphere industry at all blah blah blah...I no longer listen.

Haven't read it yet. He's been doing the podcast circuit for a while so there's tons of audio out there on better podcasts than Art of Charm.

I rented from the library and liked it so much I had to buy it. Now when any news story breaks out I can detect and identify many of their tactics.

There is another book called glass jaw; which talks about protecting your reputation

Most importantly, how can the lessons from this book be applied to our social, financial, or sexual advancements?

Havnt read it yet, but it is up next in my reading list.

RE: Trust Me, I'm Lying - Ryan Holiday Discussion
I read it a couple of days ago; it's a great book.

The main thing that stands out to me is the difference between what people think media job is and what it really is.

The people usually think that the job of the media is to report the truth in the most objective way possible. To educate the people on various problems in society (in theory at least).

But that's not the truth.

The main takeaway for me is that media is a business.

As such, its primary duty is to increase profits. That fact alone influences all decisions everybody who works in media makes - from CEOs to journalists.

That media is a business is something that is logical and a fact everybody knows, but few people stop to think about what that really means.

The news is picked not based on their truthfulness and good they would do for the society, but based on how much clicks ($$$) are they going to generate.

This also influences their research and spin they put on the news. Ryan goes into different examples in the book, each showing you how does media actually work.

All in all, a great book anyone should read.

Good book, gives you a good reason to never trust what you read in most blogs again

RE: Trust Me, I'm Lying - Ryan Holiday Discussion
I'd be careful about trusting this Ryan Holiday guy.

In the book he "claims" he was a HS dropout and studied under "mentor" Robert Greene and this is what led him to his successful career with American Apparel.

But apparently former CEO Dov Charney is a big fan of Robert Greene's book. Greene also describes himself as more of a "journalist" who was documenting things using historical case studies rather than a "guru" who takes it completely seriously in his personal life or instructs others in them.

So it definitely seems suspicious - I have a feeling that Holiday just gave an ode to Greene in his book because the CEO of American Apparel wanted to promote him, and that Holiday likely just got where he did by way of connections rather than his "rags to riches story".

He also mentions having "known" Tucker Max before his book was successful, but Tucker Max himself admits that his dad was a rich businessman, so obviously Holiday knows a lot of people in high places.

My gut suspected something was wrong when this article came out. I doubted a guy this successful and self-made could be this whiny/bluepill.

Quote:Dad, let me start this letter by saying that it isn’t my intention to embarrass you. I find that I can express myself in writing better than I can when we talk on the phone (in fact, if anyone likes this piece, that will be, in its own way, a compliment to you — I developed as a writer sitting alone in my room as a kid, trying to find ways to respond to your overwhelming parental logic) and so when I heard that you were leaning towards voting for Donald Trump, I felt inclined to put my thoughts down so they would be clear.

It’s fitting that I would write to you here anyway, because the Observer has its own father issues when it comes to Donald Trump (Mr. Trump is the publisher’s father-in-law.) This is a newspaper that, despite its sincere and passionate reporting on anti-Semitism and its frontline investigations on the rise of Russia as a national security threat, has found itself endorsing and defending Trump…even as he veers dangerously towards courting anti-Semitism and justifying Russia’s authoritarian methods (when he isn’t complimenting the tactics of Saddam Hussein.) Having been associated with my own fair share of controversial people, I empathize with the position, Jared Kushner, the paper’s owner, must be in.

He's written some reasonable stuff, but...

Here's when he proposed to his pink-haired, skrillex-cut wearing partner

Here's one of his wedding pics. Note the short hair and tattoos on the bride.

He needs to keep with liberal cred up in my opinion. He still in the environment that promotes the blue pill with the circles he moves in. Ryan know his stuff when it comes to marketing and philosophy, but he still is blue pill in someways. I hope for best for him and he use the red pill in his marriage.

He doesn't have to bash Trump. He can simply ignore it. A hit piece means he doesn't like Trump.

His body type may explain a lot.

He claims to do BJJ four to five days a week, yet he looks like a Holocaust survivor. I'm assuming his testosterone levels are tragically low.

I'm wondering if he actually has some kind of health disorder that prevents him from putting on weight and muscle.

RE: Trust Me, I'm Lying - Ryan Holiday Discussion
Here's a thought to chew on-

Trust Me, I'm Lying presents a discussion of the media as dishonest because it is profit-driven. Whatever brings the eyeballs will bring the cash...

People on the right will say instead the media is dishonest because it is in league with their ideological opponents. Like the Clinton News Network.

In the context of Ryan Holiday's book, Breitbart and similar news outlets have boosted their readership (and revenue) considerably. Some seem to care more about the message than profit (Cernovich) though.

Does Trust Me, I'm Lying give people an alternative explanation for media dishonesty? Rather than being Clinton's lapdogs, they just publish the news that the social justice liberal segment want to see? When media realized in the later-twentieth century to now that covering with a liberal slant might bring them the eyeballs?
