You CAN subvert sex-roles but only if you're already perceived as a sex symbol. Think David Bowie, Prince, or Billie-Joe Armstrong's infamous guy-liner.



It's like once you have a surplus of SMV you can waste it on co-opting feminine styles. It's like "gee, he's so sexy he can be in drag and I'd STILL F him."

I don't know about colors, but other artifacts of culture tend to drift from male association to female association, but not the reverse. The following given names were almost exclusively male until about a century ago:

Kimberly, Ashley, Shannon ,Stacey, Allison, Beverley, Blair, Carol (still a male name in Poland), Claire, Hillary, Courtney, Doris, Alice, Lauren,
Lindsay, Lynn, Meredith, and Whitney.

Additionally we have the asinine naming trend of patronyms as given names for girls, like Madison. Once firmly associated as female given names, they all but vanish as boys names. Most of the exceptions are family names where the current name holder is a III or IV of his line.
