I'm guessing you've never lived anywhere in Asia for an extended period of time? I live in China. Da Nang is extremely quiet compared to Shenzhen and other Tier-1 Chinese cities.

Pretty much all of SEA is undergoing major construction and renovation. If you've come to live in the West, you don't realize how little infrastructure development there really is here, UNTIL YOU'VE SPENT TIME IN ASIA. SEA, in particular, is building like mad. When I was in Manila and the suburbs, they were on a real torrid pace to build stuff. There's a lot of outside investment cash coming into Vietnam, the Philippines, etc. Noise and construction dust are the prices to pay for newer developments.

I find that if you go to bed early, wake up early, you'll be more or less in sync with construction noise from a sleep schedule. If you party hard and stay up all night, you'll be in for a rude awakening when the construction crew starts banging away at 6-8am to start the day. I did have to tell off some Filipino neighbors (nicely) that their 2am karaoke sessions weren't cool, but they took it in stride and canned the noise by midnight the following night.

Yes I am rather new to SEA and this is my first time in Vietnam. I have never been to China so I can't really compare. Is Danang is more quiet than, say, Saigon (District 1)?

As the OP of this thread said, I have noticed you can easily get a "bad man" (fuckboy) reputation here. The manager of my building has been giving me nasty stares lately. It's mostly the local men who behave like that, the women seem not to really care.

Can Vietnam veterans give some advice in how to be discreet in fucking multiple girls here? I'd like to keep a low profile

I'm not joking. Even in the outer districts here, let alone smaller towns, Viets always remember your face because you stick out like a sore thumb. They're always watching your every move, and they have good memories.

Well, if you eliminate contact with the building manager, then you eliminate the nasty stare problem. Move to a building known to house lots of expats. The staff are normally trained to spot you at the entrance with cameras, and then look down when you walk in with the girl. You could also contact Airnb hosts and explicitly mention the topic of visitors.

Don't even try greasing the building manager or aim to become his buddy - I tried everything when I was in a similar situation, but ultimately had to move out.

That sounds creepy. Well, this manager in question actually indirectly came to warn me he was butthurt. He told me I should park my scooter a bit on the side of the entrance. Some sort of Beta message to say "don't step on my turf".

Beautiful fucking moto riding out there, by the way. My buddy and I found some back roads to cut over the mountains in the middle on the way back to the city and some of the views were unreal. Make sure you fill your gas tank out there though because the vertical climbs suck your fuel right down and those backroads take some serious time - we almost had to leave one bike out there because my buddy underestimated how long we'd be out and didn't fill up.

The main road is very nice but the switchbacks are pretty overgrown and unkempt, which foilage growing into the road and boulders in the path from time to time. Great little adventure.

   
   
   

You shouldn't have to go through all that to get to the surf, though - as far as I know, they're mostly down below the main road out.

There's a small spot called Tam's Pub and Surf Shop that was made famous by the American G.I.'s back during the war - I believe they used to surf right there not far from the shop in town, so if you don't see anyone surfing it might just be because you weren't there during monsoon season. I didn't surf there either, though, and I never did get a chance to stop in, so I can't say.

Either way, the shop is where you'd want to pop in for tips about where to go for waves and to see a small piece of history. A lot of Vietnam vets who were stationed in that area make there way through there on return trips.

Started in Da Lat. It was very fucking cold but that was nice after the heat of Saigon. And the buildings were tall and strong, in fact, it was my most immediate liking of a place so far in Vietnam - and you know why? Because it was like Europe. It felt very Christmassy, if you know what I mean, like I'd suddenly arrived in Vienna or Switzerland or something.

Then I went to Nha Trang - the seaside resort. That was a shithole to be honest, made Pattaya seem like a cultured place. I was travelling with a Viet girl so no gaming of any kind. Full of tourists, vast numbers of mostly Russian and Chinese. Everyone in Asia hates the Chinese because they are loud and rude by most other countries standards. The central areas have pushy and aggressive street vendors but they can just be ignored. Finding a decent coffee is damn near impossible - thank God for ABC bakery company in Vietnam if you want European style breakfast (croissants, Americano coffee etc) -I like Asian food but not for breakfast.

The sea there is filthy as are the beaches. We rode on a long road to some "surf" beach - yes it was winter and off-season but man was it garbage! Why anyone would chose to stay in a resort there when Thailand is so close, I have no idea.

I then flew to Da Nang where I am now. At first it seemed very boring (Viet girl and I parted now) but it was enhanced by renting a bike. It's OK and outside of town a kilometer or two is the more beachy area on the way to Hoi An. Perhaps one could stay there longer term but it would be fucking boring I should imagine.

Put it this way... Saigon is pretty fucking boring and it's the most major city in Vietnam so tier 2 cities are more like towns.

I rode by myself to Hoi An and got the fuck out of that tourist Disney dump as soon as I could! Everything overpriced and full of Asian & Western tourists, including daft European bitches wearing the customary elephant-print pants and dreaded dreadlocks, with Mangina ginger-beared boyfriends.

I'll fly to Hanoi this evening (begrudgingly) just to check it off so I never need an excuse to come back to Vietnam lol.

Early in my stay in Vietnam, Leighton Blackstock and I met up - he stayed a week before bailing back to Bangkok. That's how long it took him to realize that Vietnam basically... kinda sucks. It's just not developed or international enough yet to be very exciting for a Westerner used to some basics.

I could do a full write-up if wanted but it wouldn't exactly be very positive!

I love the food and the lack of western fast food chains. The people are friendly and not trying to rip you off all the time and I like Vietnamese girls.
I've been to Saigon, Hanoi, Da Nang and Hoi An and enjoy them all. I like Hanoi the least out of all of them because everything closes by 11pm and it's very quiet compared to Saigon and without the beaches of Da Nang.

Hoi An is my favourite place in Vietnam, I love the old buildings and feel of the old town and getting out into the country side. Even though it does have a lot of tourists so what, they've mostly been Korean when I have been there.

Haven't personally been to Hanoi but I've heard both from my HCM girls and also other dudes based in HCM that Hanoi is more conservative. I hardly hear good things about Hanoi from HCM girls but that could be some internal rivalry that foreigners wouldn't understand. Hell, even the language is different north and south of the country lol.
